I saw some posts recently on SG where users were talking about their wishlists being out of control, as well as some users saying things like 'You probably don't even remember half the games on your wishlist, it's stupid to have that many'. I took a look and most of them had under 300 games on there. Maybe being around people on SG has skewed my perception on what an 'out of control' wishlist size is, but that didn't really seem like that many to me.

What do you all think is the most games a person should have on their wishlist?
When does it go from being meaningful to look at (as in you feel like buying these games would make that person happy) to meaningless (buying something from it would just be a drop in the bucket for that person and not really appreciated)?

And for those of you here just for gibs, here ya go. (ENDED)

No limit. My wishlist is so big Valve probably has to dedicate an entire server just for it.

I think ideally I'd keep it under 100 so it's easy to manage and actually buy and eventually play, but of course I'm closer to 300 now even tho I try to only add things I really want to play.
Just like with backlogs by the time when you notice it being a thing it probably has already gotten out of control.

Mine has gone from about 20 to 135. Since it's really useful with tools on a couple sites I use.

I kept it below for 100 for years and was happy with it. It increased within the last year due to tracking of games with possible licensing running out at some point.

Assuming you have a life beyond gaming, 20-30 titles is more than enough. If you have a job, or a family, or a school and you actually take those seriously, I honestly doubt that you'll ever be able to play more than that.

Well, it depends a lot on what you use the Wishlist for... If it is a must play list, that is, you plan to get everything in it, maybe it should be shorter. But it could be a would like to play list, so you just want to get notifications when the games get discounted to help you pick which ones to get, then it could be a lot bigger... Or maybe so you just want to have them at the "wishlist" tab at SG. :)

I myself am somewhere in the middle, with an added restriction -- I add only older games (currently, only up to 2015), and the reason for this is... because.... because... hm, actually, I do that for no sensible reason, I am just kind of weird. :P

My WL just went from about 60 to about 120 yesterday.

Cheers!

P.S.: Wait, I am not that weird, I kind of have a reason -- I like to wait to see reviews for a game before actually adding it to the WL, so I put them in a spreadsheet, where I have all games that Steam ever put in its store, and I get some review scores, and other data I might find relevant, and then twice a year I decide which ones go to my WL, and I do that by year, so... oh, that just makes it weirder, huh?

Yep, you basically have a spreadsheet observer list as pre filter for your wishlist.
That can be considered as a manager "game" on its own. :)

Have you ever considered using ITAD (isthereanydeal.com) where you can have multiple wishlists with different notification settings etc.?
At least what you are saying implies that it could prove to be usefull for you.

Thank you, yes, I do know ITAD, and I import my WL there as well....

My spreadsheet is a bit too much, there is TONS of stuff there I would never ever play, but, hey, it is nice to see a bunch of numbers going up and down... ;)

Cheers!

i used to always have it under 100. but now ive put everything id like to get into my wishlist. i find mine to big but since it is what some have said to see whats discounted its alot simpler. plus if it gives me a chance to win it on here then thats an added bonus to having them off instead of just remembering them and buying it. i only recently did that after deleting all my friends because i felt more open to just fling everything in and not just seen as greedy. its just easier to have them all in 1 bundle then go round searching for everything especially since pretty much all of them are either stories or short hog. so even if i buy alot. its gonna be a couple of days worth at most.

plus half the people who complain about large wishlists are the people who have 1000s of games so they dont need a wishlist cuz they hoarding them all!

Why are people obsessed about keeping it at some mandatory number? Just add everything you're interested in to buy at a big discount or in a bundle. Then you can even get notified when that happens and you don't manually have to go through them every time. It doesn't mean you need to buy them all right away.

Depends what you use your wishlist for I suppose. Some people like yourself use it for reasons stated. Others have like 10 so if friends want to get them something , they can just pick from a list. Its a number that can be whatever you like or want it to be. Its not something I think about too much but each to their own I suppose.

I agree, that's exactly what the Wishlist is there for.

I'd say it's for two reasons;

  1. So that if someone like friends or family decides they want to buy you a gift they can be sure that what they buy is something you really want, as opposed to something you're only vaguely interested in.
  2. So that you don't waste money every time there is a sale just for games that would be low priority and get backlogged forever.

I guess I need to get better friends then. Now they either ask what I would want or then give something they liked no matter if I had it wishlisted or not. :)

You can still check the games before buying to make sure you want it at that moment for that price, but you wont miss something you thought would be cool if only cheaper to be worth it just because you don't remember the name or where you got impressed by it.

I used to keep only 20-30 games there that I really wanted... but then they basically changed it from "what I'd like to have" to "tool to follow prices, discounts and whatnot for games you're considering" and the numbers skyrocketed. Still trying to keep it anchored to 100 or so.

100 is the absolute max for me. I was trying to keep it below 50 for a while but then E3 happened and I added a bunch of new stuff to it, so I'm at 60-ish right now.

I only use Steam wishlist because of SG. If there were a separate wishlist feature in SG, I would immediately clear my Steam wishlist, because basically it's just another way for Valve to spy on their users - along with "features" like achievements or recording playtimes. I currently have 162 games wishlisted, including many I would only consider when they're dirt cheap or free. But hey, at least it's "some" method to mark stuff that might be interesting to win or get one day. I tried to increase the list, to make it less useful for data mining and to keep track over more games that might be interesting for one reason or another, but it's very hard, there's so many games out there, that I clearly don't like.

I use my wishlist in conjunction with ITAD to shop for deals for giveaways. I'm probably doing it wrong, but it's the best way I know how and it's convenient. My inbox used to be a nightmare until I figured out that I could limit ITAD's spam. I'll admit the size of the list has gotten a little out of hand and there's probably games on there that I wouldn't give to my worst enemy. I should cull it, but I'm lazy like that. Of course there are games on there that I would like to play myself, but what percentage, I have no idea.

I don't think any number is to many. It's your wishlist and wanting a crap ton of games doesn't hurt anyone.

I have a little bit more than a thousand at the moment, but only the top 150-200 are ranked, a wishlist that big is near impossible to manage, I'd keep it smaller (less than 300) if it wasn't for Steamgifts (I only enter for wishlisted games, way easier than hiding and filtering individually thousands of games) and places like Barter and Steamtrades.

Also, I'm fairly new to Steam, still in the process of building up my library, a seizable wishlist helps me a lot during sales to better track cheap/great deals for games that might sit low on my priority, but I still consider them interesting enough to play/own.
