I remember how lackluster the discounts from last year's Summer Sale were, and I have a gut feeling it'll be disappointing this year again. What do you guys think?

Will the Steam Summer Sale have good discounts this year?

It will be much the same. A lot of games had their lowest prices a long time ago, and haven't been discounted the same since.

All too often I wait for the lowest price to be matched but it never will because valve got rid of those "Flash" sales.

It's more than that.

Sales used to be an exciting event. An event which created a buzz of anticipation of what sale would be next, people would discuss it with excitement, play the themed "sale games", hell, even I would set my alarm to wake up at 4:00am just to vote on the latest flash sale. It seriously was an "Event".

Now.... It's just a sale. Not a very good one either. Once you have seen what's on offer on the first day you have seen it all. It's cold. It's without heart. It's... the new Valve.

They make more money during the summer sale by not having flash sales, so it's about what you can expect. They are a profit organisation after all, maximised profit will always be their priority.

The indies that don't get a great deal of attention tend to drop in price pretty fast. It's great for us, but kinda tragic for the sleeper hits that nobody seems to know about. That said, some of the big budget titles do drop at a crazy rate. We'll see I suppose!

"Expecting 75% or more off a $60 game that is relatively new is rather silly, yet I see many here who seem to think that is reasonable to hope for."

Not my expectation at all. I can't name specifics but I know the sales weren't as good as 2015's.

That depends on your definition of "relatively new" - personally, I tend to think of unqualified "new" as a game still in its six month to year old new release phase, and "relatively new" (being a patient gamer) being games a year or two old - possibly even three, since it's a subjective.

Hitman and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided are less than a year old and have already been discounted to 75% off / $15 on Steam. By my use of the term, Fallout 4 is still relatively new, and has also dropped to 75% off (not on Steam, on GamersGate).

Generally speaking, I expect the Steam Summer Sale to be more about a return to historic lows we've seen in the time between sales. That may disappoint people, but that's also potentially the best deal for people who have discounted Steam credit (from cards, trading, gift cards being on sale on eBay or Fry's, etc.). Some other predictions:

Witcher 3 won't drop below its low price on GOG (50% off/$19.99 for the base game), given CD Projeckt RED owns GOG and wouldn't want to show-up their own just-ended summer sale.

Civilization VI hasn't hit 50% off, so it may be a headliner in terms of historic low prices (seems due for a new lowest price, so I expect it will get a lukewarm reception as a headliner).

Kerbal Space Program might not hit its historic low - not all games hit their best price on the Summer Sale. It's been at 50% and 66%, and I could see it going for either price during the sale.

Other random guesses (generally the meeting but not beating past lows): Darkest Dungeon - 50%. Nier Automata - 15% off (hasn't been discounted on Steam at all yet). Hyper Light Drifter - 50% (a previous low price on Steam). Furi - 50% (it's been that a number of places recently). Life is Strange (full season) - 75% off.

Of course, I could be wrong about each and every prediction, in which case I'll probably be pleasantly surprised and have to decide if I am going to pry open my Steam wallet or wait for a game to show up on Humble (typically a month later, while the game's still in my backlog).

I just hope I can get Dark Souls 2 for less than $10. Or Dark Souls 3 for a good price.

If you want Dark Souls 2, it might be worth buying into the current Humble Monthly Bundle given that's the one guaranteed game you get this upcoming month (and can get it immediately if you pay prior to the billing date). It's not like you have to keep subscribed, and at least you know you're getting DS2 for $12, plus the other mystery games at the start of July.

I know, but I don't really have the time to play the lot of games I'd get with the bundle, and I don't know if $12 is the lowest price I can pay for it. If I can get a lower price on steam, I'll buy it there. If not, well, I guess I'll buy the bundle.

Wouldn't it make more sense to just buy the current Humble Monthly, keep DS2 and sell the rest of the games on group buys or somewhere else?
You'll most likelly get at least half the money back so DS2 will cost you less than $10 in the end.

I'm not comfortable with reselling games, but yes, I've considered buying the HM. I'll end up buying it if the price during these sales isn't low enough.

Another option might be nuuvem, I got DS2 from there for cheap (the original bundle tho, not Scholar of the First Sin).

Failing all else, I suppose there might be a few giveaways of the game when the month turns over. Quite a few people already own the game given how popular the series was.

how about the other way around? I was happy to sell it for $5, I'm sure other folks already subscribed would be willing to part with it for about the same amount.

Umh, I don't have a paypal account, but I could surely buy some tf2 or cs go keys if you're interested in those. Thanks for the tip, but I don't really know any traders :)

Mmh dunno if that can help putting you at ease but have a look at the Group Buys Steam group.. you won't have to deal with trades individually .. you just post your available games from your Bundle Split and people will post there. It's pretty simple and straight-forward, you could probably end up keeping DS2 for about 5-6$ if not less all depending of the other games put into the Monthly.

One potential benefit of the recent change disallowing buying gifts to inventory is that publishers & developers may be more open to putting their games on deep discount during sales, since there is less fear of them being stockpiled for trade/re-sale later.

I'm not holding my breath or anything, especially since flash sales are probably not coming back, but I feel like there might be a slight uptrend in discounts this time around.

Permalink

Good point. It might take them a while to consider this, because they usually like to observe buying trends ahead of any changes.

As for flash sales, I'm pretty sure they're legally obligated to not do those during the big sales any more (could be wrong). Valve got slapped with a bunch of legal stuff all at once about currency, product assurance, sales and such. One of them definitely related to the huge sales, and I think the flash-sales during those periods were considered anti-consumer or something, so were forced to apply discounts globally rather than cycle them. If I'm not mistaken, they can only feature titles for center-stage attention and not shuffle the actual discounts (not sure if the game owners can do that manually through the duration of the sale though?). That happened about the same time they stopped doing the more interesting big sale events that were admittedly a bit tricky (like the sales where you could unlock extras like TF2 hats and such by completing achievements in the games on sale, only during the big event),

They're able to do flash sales outside of the big discount periods apparently, so maybe I'm misremembering part of it. It was a big deal back when it happened, but people seem to have totally forgotten about the legal stuff they got slapped with, and just think Valve are 'too lazy' to make a big thing out of it.

Flash sales certainly won't come back unless Valve find a way to legally exempt them as a reason to request a refund.
Because otherwise it would cost them money (transaction fees & administative costs) with a lot of people getting the game early on in the sale, then refunding and re-buying for a lower price when a flash sale happens.

Another good point. I never even factored in the presence of the refund system we have now.

Most people find follow up sales lacking because they already got all the deals they REALLY REALLY wanted.

I don't think that expecting a 90% off a AAA title is a good expectation to hold :P Though with the recent GTA situation I only think that people will still buy it as much if it hits the 90% off lol

Take2 issued a cease and desist letter to a third party modding tool that let people do deep modding stuff.
People interpretted this as "they're banning all mods", and got in an uproar.

It's sorta like how if you want to use the ENB enhanced visuals stuff in Skyrim you need to use a custom dll injector thing, only GTAV has an online game component so T2 said it was a security concern and slapped OpenIV (the modding thing) with a lawyer letter, which they heeded. You can still mod the game, but apparently it's mostly cosmetically now, rather than full-game conversions or deeper mechanics. The tool itself was supposed to be for innocent modding but given how much it could influence, it makes sense that it might be getting abused, and the online play has a bit of an issue with cheating.

Lots of grumbling about it though.

I see, thanks.

The main reason for the grumbling is a combination of that, the fact that rockstar had been very supportive of mods in the past, the fact that TT had stated that they don't think they are microtransactioning GTA online enough (with their bi monthly release of ships, planes, cars and buildings worth near real life $100 each), and the realistic fact that there are a dozen other ways of making gta online unmoddable. That and the general mistreatment of the community over the years has pretty much made this the stray that broke the camel's back.

Such as since OpenIV and other mod pages being open source, you can specifically make sure that process is not running while in game (which openIV is supposede to not work in online so shrug). TT went after regular modding before going after several paid cheats sites which is one of the reason people are so ticked.

Personally I'm neutral in this situation, though I believe that TT is deserving the heat coming their way. Wouldn't post a negative review myselff over this as I only play GTA V one in a blue moon but some people find it annoying enough to do so. Their choice I guess

Urgh, sounds like a PR mess too. They definitely mishandled it either way. Like I mentioned in the other thread, they could have actually gotten on board with OpenIV and tried to work with them to monitor any security threat they felt was going down. The arms race of countering a never-ending trickle of new hacks is a harsh one, and the best weapon is usually inside info. At the very least they could have made a token effort to reshape OpenIV so it conformed with measures of security they wanted.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Working directly with OpenIV definitely would have been the harder path of the directions they could have taken, but it would have allowed them to not kill their modding community and to actually find out more about whatever 'loophole' they thought these programs created. It really is a shame because I did enjoy the time I played GTA single player and multiplayer (even if I did encounter a couple people with cheats).

I really do hope they find a way of clearing rockstars name, otherwise R* may be killed by Take Two's actions

Just stay calm, see if games you're really interested in drop to a price you're willing to pay (regardless of discount%) and don't forget to check if other stores don't have a better deal.
Nothing to worry about.

The summer sales are devious and terrible. I get a 2 week paid vacation from my job due to a shutdown at the factory, and that lands at the end of July. Even if I want to save up some cash, knowing I have a 2 week chillout session coming up makes my wallet fling itself reflexively at the screen.

Meanwhile the backlog grows ever larger~

I really don't care because I finally reached backlog nirvana and won't be buying anything unless I get at least 50% of my library properly played.
(that said, I agree with people saying that there will be some good indie deals. Huge discounts on AAA titles just won't happen)

I generally go after "Collector Packs" as they have the best price per game. Something like this: http://store.steampowered.com/sub/15482/

And when they hit 50% off, it's like a nightmare for wallets. (:

It doesn't help that the entire internet always hypes every steam sale. It's so popular that I feel you don't need a big discount to get a lot of exposure since everyone has their eyes on the site during that time.
With that said, there are still quite a few good discount once in a while, but some of those are games I already have so I hardly notice.

Last year they trialed offering smaller discounts at their sale and their profits were higher than ever. The amount of discount seems to have little effect on their sales. We will no longer see the incredible deep discounted flash sales that we once saw. Those aren't as profitable as these sales.

Yes, the prices will remain the same throughout the sale unlike years ago, when a game that you voted for would get a bigger discount for a limited period of time, usually 24 hours.

At GOG you can get unique retro games; the upcoming Steam sale may disappoint you (like last year's dull sale) and you may wanna switch to another platform. Or not?

I now regularly buy games throughout the year, so when sales come around, they are naturally less exciting to me as they once were. What I'm short on now though is TIME to play all these games I paid money for. Even if I quite my social life, I doubt that's even enough time to get through everything. But that's another conversation I guess.

As someone who has only really been paying attention to steam for less then a year, I've never seen these supposedly amazing sales of myth and legend people rave about. Seems really rare to me to see extremely deep discounts (80-90%) for anything that normally retails for over $10
