I probably won't be able to afford a full fledged VR System for another year or so, so this is a nice stopgap for me.

Wow, looks really nice. I didn't know you could already use VR (of sorts) for Steam games with your phone. This is a nice concept but if there will be limitations on some games on Steam, I'd rather save for Oculus Rift or HTC Vive, just to have a perfect and flawless experience rather than raging later on that I can't really use it on some games, or how it works imperfectly.
They should develop a cheaper version of Oculus and Vive for PC. Then I'd buy it. Say 400 - 500€ tops.
Guess this is like smartphone technology, nowadays you can get a superior phone for 300€ when 10 years ago better phones cost more than 700€ - at least in Finland. Not gonna invest this time, but will definitely take a look later on how this company is doing.

I didn't get an Oculus DK2 for $350 because I figured price would go down once they started to mass produce them. Boy did they prove me wrong on that one.

That looks great. I'd definitely back it up to get a taste of what vr is until I the current models become available to non-millionaires, but sadly my phone doesn't have a gyroscope, so no vr for me. Thanks for sharing though.

That's my understanding at least. Riftcat alone would be pretty useless for you since you wouldn't have positioning but their kit would compensate for that. (You can still download the trial version to test the streaming performance) If you'e actually interested in it, you might want to send them an email to confirm if it would work for your particular phone.

With a larger phone and the right headset, you can get a 120 degrees FOV, pretty much the same as the Vive and Rift.
Of course the FPS and latency won't match that of a dedicated HMD but it doesn't suck as bad as you're making it look like. I find this to be a nice stopgad for until I can afford an actual VR headset and I'm quite curious to find out what kind of mobile VR games developers can come up with.

There are a couple, most notable being the Gear VR. But this is for the room-scale head and controllers tracking system, which should technically work with any headset.

$200,000 Stretch Goal has been met. Fully wireless VR will be coming soon.

Less than 24 hours to go. Last chance for those who would like to get in early.

I don't know how many of you could be interested in this, but I figured I would share the info for those who would.
NOLO VR is currently running a Kickstarter for their VR motion tracking system. It's a room-scale tracking system with controllers offering similar capabilities to the HTC VIve ones for $99. (They only offer front facing at the moment, not true 360 degrees as they include only one base station) The Kickstarter has already surpassed it's $50k funding goal and is still a long way from the March 11th end date so it's definitely happening. (Deliveries are expected for May)
They even added a stretch goal for a fully wireless connection with the PC if they reach $200k.The $200k goal has been met so wireless connection will be coming as well. The kit can be used in conjunction with an Android smartphone to provide the full VR experience to mobile VR games. When used together with Riftcat's Vridge, it can be used to play SteamVR games using your phone as a VR headset. All you need is a Google Cardboard viewer. It will also be possible to use it with other HMD like OSVR or Pimax 4K to add the tracking capabilities.
I've been using Riftcat for a while to play SteamVR games and it's surprisingly good. (It's from their partnership with NOLO that I learned about the product.) Right now It's currently limited to games playable with a controller or KB+M however. This will add the possibility for me to play all those other games that requires tracked controllers, for much cheaper than getting a whole HTC Vive kit.
So, if you already have a capable computer and smartphone and you would like to try VR without investing too much money, that could be something to look into. There are still a few early birds spots available at $99, while the MSRP is expected to be $149. (You can also pledge an extra $10 to receive a Riftcat license, normally sold for $15 by itself.)
