I really enjoyed the books, and the original radio show, and I've seen the movie, but never really got into it.

i don't know why i like the movie so much, guess it's freeman's portrayal of arthur dent.. or just the actual realization of the images i had in my head for so long after reading the book

its stephen fry as the guide that does it for me, freeman does a do a nice arthur though, not so sure about the woman playing trillian and the guy playing zaphod is annoying as hell in that role, otoh mos def is brilliant as ford to me, i never could get into the tv series or the radio show, liked the books though, i read them first and as with many media i find most attempts to turn book into film/tv series/radio show etc to be inferior to the author and my imagination :)

Well, Zaphod is an annoying character to me no matter the incarnation, so I though the actor was spot on

I dunno, it's the other way around for me. Books totally kicked ass and I was kind of underwhelmed by the movie.

We lost DA way too early :(

The movie is nice, too bad it's only the first book :(

Brilliant books, though I haven't seen the movie or the TV series. How accurate are they?

it's pretty accurate - but being a movie there are huge restrictions as in how much of the story you can squeeze into 1½ hours, so a lot of the quirky details from the book are either missing, or changed to fit the big screen better

Every version of the story serious diverges wildly except for a few key scenes. Including the order in which those scenes happen. This has been the case ever since the original radio play was rewritten as the first book. The books ended up the most expanded version, which is why it's usually taken as the canon version. But each version has it's quirks

Huge fan of the books and the BBC series over here. Only thing I really liked from the movie was the opening song (So long and thanks for all the fish).

You should definitely watch the 1981 BBC series. Considerably hard to find, but totally worth it.

The UK series was definitely more enjoyable for me than the movie. And everyone should watch it. Though the movie did have Zooey Deschanel in it, so that was good. Of course the books are better, but I don't think I ever read Mostly Harmless. It's only my opinion but I liked Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency and The Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul more than the Hitchhiker's books. The Dirk Gently TV series would probably rank lower than the Hitchhiker movie if I ever made an ordered list.

I read all the books up until Mostly Harmless about 6 months ago. I couldn't really stick to Mostly Harmless, though. Not sure if I was burnt out on the humor or if I just found the way it began to be boring. Really love the books, but the movie is what got me interested in the first place admittedly.

I've got the five phases of the BBC radio play and the five of the books read by the author himself on permanent rotation on my mp3 player. Even the sixth book read by Simon Jones (written by Eoin Colfer which is IMO similar in linguistic style as DNA) is on there.

If I have to choose between the movie and the tv series, I'd go for the tv series hands down.

I read the 6th book by Eoin Colfer, but I defo not enjoyed it as much as the originals... though it was still a good fun, and the written style is indeed quite similar.
