To be honest I kinda like origin. Although there is no real community and it lacks many features that steam has, its light and fast. I have had way to many problems with steam so called offline mode. Steam also crashes every time I click on something to fast.

Don't flame me cuz I don't hate origin. Tell me why you don't like it.

EDIT:

Origin Support Thing 1: I purchased BulletStorm off of Amazon and was unable to activate it on Origin. So I talk to tech support and they give me a new key. Turns out the new key is a Mass Effect 2 key. I guess their gross incompetency is not all that bad.

Origin Support Thing 2: I purchased Bad Company 2 Digital Deluxe Edition off Amazon and was unable to access the bonus stuff. So I talk to Origin support and they give me like 10 BFBC2 keys because their idiots. They eventually gave me the bonus content. Then I sold the extra keys >:).

Worse are the arbitrary bans from Origin, in which every Origin game you own instantly becomes unplayable.

If you complain on the forums ... instant ban from all your games.
Some 12 year old complains that you cussed at them on chat? .... instant ban from all your games.
Log in during peak times and complain that servers are slow? .... instant ban from all your games.

In other words, not only is customer service horrendous, but they pass sweeping and arbitrary bans for anyone that complains too much or does not accept them as gods.

They only collected information relating to their software. All they did was check your system specs and also registry entries to determine if CD keys were obtained legitimately and matched the ones on your account. They also checked a few other files relating to Origin as there was a recent client update at the time that changed the Origin directory along with the games directory. It was all legitimate and for a purpose.

All this drama about Origin being spyware came about a few months back when some idiot was reading through Origin's EULA and didn't understand a few lines and misinterpreted it wrongly because their EULA didn't specifically state what was being collected. They used a general term, and then this this idiot decided to blog about it and just blew it out of proportion making up a load of BS about how Origin are stealing all your personal details and selling them off when that clearly was not the case.

If you've ever bothered skimming through the Steam EULA, it says pretty much the same stuff that the Origin EULA said. They express their own right to collect data from you at any time at their own discretion.

+If you wanna talk about corporations accessing your personal information without your direct consent, go learn what Google, Amazon and Facebook have been doing.

That's only just the icing on the cake - Facebook’s Data Pool

Facebook records every single message you've sent and received, every single chat you've had, and if you've ever used facebook on your phone, then it's tracked you too (even if you haven't used the check-in feature). They have your address, even if you've never typed it out yourself and a lot more information on you then you could've imagined.

When more and more people started becoming aware of all the info Facebook had on them, that's when they came up with the 'timeline' idea as a cover-up for their actions. You really can't believe Facebook was planning the timeline feature right from the very beginning can you?

EA Support sucks. Got into an issue with them. They didn't help at all. Refused to refund me for my product.

I vowed to never use their products again, with the only exception being the dead space and mass effect series.

Plus, Steam is superior to Origin in every way. I don't know why you say Steam is slow for you.

Permalink

Steam wouldn't refund you either. They'll just straight up ban you if you try getting your money back.

I've found EA/Origin support to be quite helpful personally. Get a reply within minutes (rather than days as is with Steam) and they actually gave me a free Bad Company 2 CD key once when I had trouble with my account. I will admit that some of the Origin support staff are clueless but they're probably new and trying their best, so can you really blame them? You can always ask to speak to someone else.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You're either an EA employee, or you just got unrealistically lucky.

  1. I wouldn't need Steam to refund me in the first place since I've never had a problem with their services. They only ban/ mess with people who have violated their terms of use. Origin will upright ban some people for no apparent reason, and then they decide to keep quiet about it, never addressing the issue to the public.

  2. The fact that you said EA gave you a free CD-key is extremely suspicious. Handing out some discount/promo code is realistic, but a whole game???

  3. The experience I had may have not been the one you had. Doesn't matter to me. I'm not giving them a second chance, and I never will. The service I received was horrible. They took weeks to reply to me over my issue, and in the end I lost my money for a product I could never use.

Don't care if he's lying or telling the truth. Plus I dealt with EA about a year ago. Maybe they received so much hate that they're now giving away free keys to compensate as some kind of new policy. I can understand why considering they doing awful (or used to, anyways...)

EA gave me a free game as well as making sure I recived all the bonus material I was entitled too. I have a Steam support request that has been open for 2 months; and still waiting.

I don't dislike either system....I do not like how you can't buy a game Retail for the best price and activate the code where you like. Steam, Origins, Windows Live, xfire, GameSpy, etc. (I do not want multiple platform). I miss owning the games that are paid for.

Valve employs customer service people around the world. How fast you get replies and how competent they are depends on the country you live in. In my country, it does not take days (not even one day) to get a reply.

EA doesn't even bother. They only have one global support (English only).

PS: Origin and Steam support have completely different basis. It's not very reasonable to compare waiting time.

EA tried to make a similar DRM to Valve's, 5 years too late. Their system is incredibly flawed (I already exploited myself a bunch of free games from them), interaction between players is nearly non-existant, Costumer support is a joke, whole accounts get suspended for no justifiable reason (cursing in the forums is one of them) and some games like Battlefield 3 need even more shit on top of it in order to work (Battlelog).

It's just an annoyance that quite frankly we could all go without. Also, I can't even play Battlefield 3 in Singleplayer when my internet goes out because it requires a constant internet connection. Supporting a platform like Origin is a way to fuck yourself.

Read that article. People being banned from their games for posts made on the Origin forums. Worrying.
Some of those temp bans being upgraded permanent after they contacted support. Banning people for contacting support is a novel method to reduce costs, sad thing is it will probably work until they hit someone who can afford to fight it.
Someone banned (a 72 hour ban which became permanent when he queried support) for a post someone else made. At best this is incompetence. Since the forums are linked to your Origin account, the incompetence touches whatever means they have to prevent credit card details being stolen.

And the worst part of all this: Silence from EA about the mess.

They're not Spyware. Steam does the same, but it isn't mandatory, and you have to say yes or no before they scan your computer.

With Origin, you're forced to accept their terms before using their service, and that grants them the freedom to scan your PC. It's mostly harmless either way.

I don't hate them per say. I'm actually glad to see some sort of compition for the monopoly that is Steam. But EA is the worst to do it. A LOT of gamers hate them and for good reason. They come up with flimsy excuses to keep games Origin-exclusive and not release them on Steam (ME3 being the latest). They don't care about their customers at all. Not to mention the fact they might actually be considered Spyware in some countries.

The service itself seemed meh from what I've seen. I got Mass Effect 2 for free from buying DA2 and never play it because of a number of reasons. First of which being the fact I have to have origin running. I don't like the worry of bans (something I don't like about Steam either) or the bad customer support (something that Steam has too). It could be good, but it's just too... EA to be anything great.

You don't need Origin running to play games on it. You only need Origin to INSTALL The game. Afterwards, you can launch it and play it, without the need to have Origin running while you do. It's been like this for ALL of the games I have on Origin.

That seems to be the equivalent of the NES "flashing blue screen when you turn it on" problem -- and it's 2012. WHY IS EA STUCK IN 1985? Why should you have to restart the Origin client before you've even logged in?

(And this may be a case of, the screenshot was taken when the computer had no Internet connection and Origin is complaining that it has no route to the mothership, in which case it's a complaint about the mandatory online nature of the whole thing.)
