Hi SG,

You might remember that 5 months ago we had a discussion about scripts and add-ons used to automatically join giveaways, and how they are against the rules.

Unfortunately, a large number of users continued to use those scripts, and we needed to suspend 1,614 users today. The suspensions are based on activity from the past week. For now, those users have received a short suspension as a reminder to disable their scripts. However, future suspensions will be more severe, or permanent.

Hopefully this will help to keep the community fair for everyone. Enjoy your week!

calling out is also against the rules, so we should ban everyone that did that without warning?

It is a difference between such things because one is using glitches/hacks/bad scripts and stuff and the "calling out" is not really clear written down.
A part speak from calling out for all that not is good/nice for them but i worked inside that point and the right definition is "calling out a rulebreak".

sry not more time for a answer... i am back in a few days

it does more damage to individuals and the community to call out and make people look bad than to leech 10 cent games with a script...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't think that, maybe only by a failure, a made "calling out" make the same damage then 2-3k (a low rating, i personal think that much more use autojoiners) people make that use bad scripts/hack/use glichtes and such things (it give much lesser calling outs then autojoiners...).
And the first one can be a impuls reaction in rage (not nice but sometimes understandable) and the second one are people that plan to break rules and make themself work to download a script and so on.
For me it is complete uninteresting if it is a 10 cents game or a 15€ Game.
This thousands people destroy as example the public giveaways and that is not a little thing. It harms the real level 0 and 1 users and drains GA's.
The Autojoiners say, mostly, not thanks, mostly nothing else too, mostly not communicate with other people on sg, they make nothing else then "leech" (with unfair "equipment"). And so they are only unneeded work for the site infrastructure, the support and the people that spend money to give games away (not from interest if they spended 1$ or 100$).

"Cheaters" are .... (i am too friendly today to write the word that is in my mind :o)) -and yes i am harsh by cheaters/hackers and such people that harm other ones.

Auto-join scripts have been confirmed as against the rules not so long ago. They were basically alright (or at least grey zone) for a few years. It is in the FAQ now, but it wasn't there in the past (I believe this was added at some point in 2017).

Why a reminder? Because we should give people the chance to redeem themselves. I am sure you made some mistakes in your life as well. And I am also sure you were happy that people were not as harsh to you then as you want us to be here now. People make mistakes. Those need to be punished, sure. But immediate perma-bans are not the solution. Some of those people might become decent SG members - even after two or three offenses - if we just give them the chance to do that.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

completely agree. used autojoin in the past. and thinking of not being here, now, doesn't feel good.

maybe, KA, 3 offenses are a "lot", and if you're high level even worse... but this is SG, chances kingdom!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I think it depends. 3 offenses might be a lot for someone who just joined a month ago. Not that much for someone who has been here for 6 years. I don't even want to say we should never ever perma-ban someone. I just think we should try everything before we do that. So, growing suspensions just make more sense to me. Why not suspend someone for a month or so after offense no. 3 (just a random number, didn't really think this through yet ^^)? That would be a clear message and probably start a thinking process for some people at least.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

again, you're too idealistic! ;p someone who just joined a month ago have no chance to gain 3 strikes with our detection rate and understaffed support ;p people go on for months until they serve their first suspension for non-activations for example ;p And I've had users serving a month suspension on my 1st report, because they accumulated so many rulebreaks, and you're talking about mane on 3rd strike? ;p

Second or third chances are ok for me but not if people do such stuff with criminal energy.
They searched for such a script, install it and know they go against the rules.

After many many many threads and the clear words against autjoiners, 5 month ago, from cg i don't think that it is needed to give AGAIN a "warning".
And for sure not when 1600 people use the Autojoiners in one week (so in the end much more use it).
They had enough warnings over the last months (and for sure before too)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

They were warned. And now they got suspended. I think that's pretty alright. My suggestion would be if they do it again, they get a longer suspension. Quite a bit longer. Next time will be even longer. So we give them a chance to change their behavior. Because some people actually do change their behavior. And I would just find it sad to exlude those people.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I agree with you to more or less half of your post ;p I agrere that warning fitst, then short suspension, then long suspension is a right approach. But if someone continues to use autojoin bot after warning, after 5 day suspension,m after long suspension - it is clear to me that this someone took their side, and this side is side of concious breaking of rules. There is no chance someone got 3 warnings and is not aware that what he is doing is against the rules. If he does it it means he want to break rul;es because it's profitable to him more than suspensions are hurting his profits.

I really don't understand why they decide to not allow users to use autojoin, it's not like it gave a massive advantage to only some people, it was a free tool and everybody could use it. I really don't mind having or not the option of autojoining giveaways, I always preferred to do it manually because it would often use my points in a very "irresponsible" way, but it was very useful when I was away from home.

However, I'm a pretty easygoing guy, and I'm quite willing to give you a chance to "see the light", and realize that these giveaways cost people their hard-earned money. Have some respect for the giveaway creators, their time, and their money, and don't use autojoin, please.

Well, it's mostly bundles leftovers,
or very shit games just to gain level...
or maybe some dev giving away free keys just that he can make money out of trading cards of his no effort game
And that is 90% of the giveaways in this site.

If someone does use that hard-earned money to buy a very special game just to give it back (and get some levels in the site what would it benefit him) I'll have all of the respect for this person for doing that. But still, that don't have anything to do with autojoin.

Comment has been collapsed.

Bundles also cost hard-earned money, developers lose potential sales by doing giveaways and most giveaways are decent.
There are a lot of problem with autojoining, one being that you can enter 24/7 and have a clear advantage over regular users.
And apparently winning too many games too often makes people stop seeing them as actual games and just as some token.

I've also noticed that you are a very active user, many gifts sent, very generous of you and I respect that, but I don't understand why you take offence in what I say when it's simply truth, that is what most of the giveaways in this site are, and most people using this site are using it as a tool. there are a lot of issues not being addressed and I don't really think that not allowing autojoin helps the community in any substantive way.

A very weird comparison, and scripts are not bots, everybody still got only one ticket to win,
and using your points to enter giveaways for games that you don't actually want is very pointless, you can do it even without scripts.
I guess you don't know how autojoin works, you can use it to join any game in the main page and spend all your points in things you don't actually want, but I believe that most people were using it to join games in their wishlist only, things that they do want.

bots are scripted, but a script isn't necessarily a bot. Bots would drastically increase ones chance to win, if someone has multiple fake accounts just to increase his entries what would be very hurtful to the site and the community, for sure.

" "I guess", "I believe" and "90%" are examples of false suppositions and conjecture, not facts (truth) "
Yes, I did not collect hard data to say it's 90%, It's a supposition based on every GA that I see everyday in the main page, maybe is around 75% maybe 95%, but it's most for sure. when I said I "guess so" it was because the way phrased things sounded like you didn't actually knew how the script worked, and "I believe" because everyone who I know that used autojoin, used it to join GA for games that they wanted.you don't need hard data to back up every word you say man, your analogy also wasn't factual at all, it was a supposition in how people used the tool and how it worked.

And yes, I do want to understand how not allowing that tool to be used would help the community, nobody actually replied with a answer to that, and my replies are just stating my opinion, they are not attacks at all, that's far from being my intention.

I want to understand how not allowing that tool to be used would help the community

I guess nobody explained it because it's that obvious. A real person needs to sleep, work, go shopping for groceries, meet friends and so on which will prevent them from entering GAs. A real person is also often picky about the GAs they join. A bot or script however does not. It keeps entering GAs 24/7 and enters much, MUCH more GAs than is humanly possible thus highly increasing the odds of winning.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

" A bot or script however does not"
It does, just make it join stuff on your wishlist.

"It keeps entering GAs 24/7"
Only if you have the page open

"MUCH more GAs than is humanly possible"
It's possible, it just take a lot of time, and everybody still have the same amount of points.

And none of this explain how it would help the community. if someone wants to spend all his points entering the GA that he wants, and not engaging much with the community it 's something that he could do with or without the scrips

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

If someone wants to spend all his points entering the GA that he wants, and not engaging much with the community it 's something that he could do with or without the scrips.

It's about equal chances. If somebody wants to waste their life sitting on SG all day entering GAs that's their choice.

It simply comes down to the fact that those kind of people are not welcome here so kicking them out helps the community.
But it's ok. Apparently you don't want to understand.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It was a free, well known tool that anyone could use it, how's that not equal chances?

"It simply comes down to the fact that those kind of people are not welcome"
as long as they respect the guidelines they can use it in anyway they want.

also, I'm not defending anyone who STILL uses scripts, I don't think anyone should after they address it very clearly in the guidelines update.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I think the problem is that you're looking at scripts from a reasonable perspective, while the reality is that with every good and reasonable thing on the internet people will want to exploit it and abuse it, and that's what SG is trying to stop here. The purpose of most sites is for people to use them by actually being midful and deliberately pushing buttons, and then there came scripts, which are often used for fraudelent purposes and not something most people resort to. And even though the script, as you mentioned, can be used reasonably, again, in reality, there's so many people using it unreasonably - mostly just for getting a +1 in their Steam game count. Sure, in some cases it's nice for me to go out and leave the browser open so that a script can do the work for me, but not really on a website where I gain an advantage over people who are actively participatingy and engaging with the community.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I see, you are right, I'm coming from a very reasonable perspective with scripts.

I kinda wish that "autojoin" was a native option in the site, but altered in a way that people would not exploit it or keeping getting in GA that they don't actually want. Because people who want to be an active part of the community will be active and the peolle who use it casually will use it casually regardless of having the option of autojoining.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't think anyone should after they address it very clearly in the guidelines update.

I think you misunderstood something there. Autojoin scripts didn't become "illegal" with that Guideline update 5 months ago. If I remember correctly they've been forbidden eversince I joined this site 3 years ago. cg just rephrased the rule to make it more clear because the old phrasing "automatically generated content" was extremely vague but it was referring to autojoin scripts nontheless.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, it is kinda vague and probably before scripts where even a thing in this site, so since they addressed it very clearly, I don't think anyone should still be using it even if there was no suspensions.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Many people do not configure their auto-join, they will enter anything possible.

How it would help the community?
The community -in my opinion- is kept alive by people contributing. In discussions or by creating giveaway, nest in conjunction, for example by creating puzzles, train or the like.
I think, and of course you and everyone else is free to disagree, that many active users get pissed if several giveaways of theirs in a row are won by someone who does not contribute (in community discussions or giveaways), does not even contribute a simple "thanks" after winning a giveaway.
If you suspend, maybe even ban, auto-join users, those who actively contribute will experience above disappointment less often and so are more willing to stay active here.

Imho users who use auto-join, leak private GA links or use them, try to sneak into private groups or whine why they are not accepted all the time, contribute to a decline in general enjoyment for all the other uses.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

this is a very legit answer, I'm glad you took the time.

maybe that's the problem with how I look at this site, I see it as a tool that has a community around it, and not much the other way around, maybe because when I first joined it was already flooded with bundle leftovers, devs trying to make money out of keys and people grinding for levels. I use this site very casually, I don't check the threads very often and I don't do much giveaways, although I would love to do some more (but I don't have income for that right now, unfortunately).

I don't see why anyone should get pissed by someone not active in the community winning an open GA, since everybody who entered has the same odds of winning, anyway not allowing users to use the scripts don't necessarily make them more active, is where I come from.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The community -in my opinion- is kept alive by people contributing.

If that were really the case, the autojoin ban rule wouldn't apply to people who have contributed a threshold amount, or create a certain threshold value of giveaways a month. The way it's handled now, they capture some leechers (who just create new leecher accounts and start again) as well as contributors who have committed the dubious crime of being mildly lazy.

Seems you change your mind rather often. To cite a comment by you made 4 days ago:

Anyway, been very disappointed with the quality of games showing up on SG lately, since I started buying the Humble Monthly. The site's giveaways are mainly people giving away their bundle dupes, and since I already buy most bundles, there's close to zero value for me. All I lose is a place to pass off my own bundle dupes. I'm happy to let those keys site idle forever, so best of luck to them, but I'm done.

Comment has been collapsed.

Nothing in that quote is inconsistent. I thought maybe since no suspensions had been forthcoming since the original announcement, I could safely start contributing again without my giveaways going to waste by an arbitrary ban. Unfortunately, less than three weeks after resuming my giveaways, the suspensions happened. I see now that I was wrong and enduring low quality giveaways isn't enough to make me want to play along with an arbitrary rule that doesn't take into account relative contribution when being enforced.

man level 0/1/2 is full of autojoiners people who are always online, have over 50.000 giveaway entries etc.

OK it is good I guess.
But what about fair 'scripters'? Those who automatise entry to only few most wanted games to save time — not for every shitty indie with highest chance of win and trading cards? (not me)

there is no such thing as 'fair autojoin scripter' - even if you design your script to join just a few most wanted games you are still gaining an unfair advantage against all actually fair users who join these GAs.

While you're at it can you please change the section so it says rules instead of guidelines since they're actual rules?

top google-itself entry:

guideline
ˈɡʌɪdlʌɪn/
noun
noun: guideline; plural noun: guidelines

a general rule, principle, or piece of advice.

something that is first defined as 'general rule' is not an actual rule?

Hm, if you get banned, is there a (long) explanation on the page as to why you were banned? Cause I kind of expect a lot of the people that are doing it are not even really aware of what they are doing wrong...

Each time you get suspended if you try to log into SG you are redirected to part of Support page with your suspensios which have person who suspended you explaining why you got suspended. you are fully aware why you got suspended. Only reason I can think of why soomeone daily visiting may not notice it is if they are running 24/7 bot and not visitiong website on their own at all, so even if they get explanation over and over again they never see it, because they never visit, only run a bot. And tbh - do we really need such users in community? People who never join site, just run bot in background all the time?

Oh, no, people like that should definitely be removed. I just thought if there was just a generic "you broke a rule" or something that people might not understand...

Now that I think about this, it would be interesting to see a box where banned people had to give a sensible reply about having understood why they were banned before it being lifted... But I guess that would be along the lines of sites thats go with an "immediate permaban but you can request an unban" approach... which creates overhead and stuff

Nope, even if you are banned for something you write on forums you see the very person who banned you and their explanation for it, and you can not agree and wait for reply (sadly not meaning you will get a reply - I once conquered my suspendios, got it closed without a comment, reopened it and still didn't get a reply for months until mod quit and noone else there to reply).

That's good. I do wonder though how you could distinguish those scripts since I'm pretty sure that scripts could be altered in a way to not reveal themselves behavior-wise.

Is ESGST (Enhanced SteamGifts & SteamTrades) allowed? I don't know about autojoin in it but I use it to see gibs easier (endless scrolling, etc.)

I'm not a support member, but yes - of course.
ESGST even has a thread on SG (you'd think it was deleted if it was not allowed).

A lot of people use the features ESGST offer without any problem, so you're good.

What's that even supposed to mean? Did you just admit that you changed your modus operandi? Or is it just a transitional phase where you have to find the right balance? :D

I'm not disappointed at all, I mean you are free to do what you feel is right, but I noticed some changing in your behavior, more precisely you're not as sassy as you used to be and I like that transition. That also made me believe you eventually got rid of your BL. So yeah, I also think you mellowed out, and it's interesting to see how this will develop further. ;p

Thanks for the info!
It's not a big impact, being blacklisted by someone who gets offended by being told that the can do anything. I didn't even try to be 'funnyfuck'. Just replying to your edgyfuck show. Unaimed, useless show of a comment with lowkey threatening random, unnamed people, just talking instead of doing. And after that you even stated that a comment is a comment, what reply did you expect after that scientific breakthrough?
Do private giveaways if you want, nobody will stop you. As I said, it's a free site, it's your choice. I wish you'll sort out thing enough that you won't find peace instead of wanting to pick fights on stupid things.
And you are seriously wrong if you think that it means anything to me, being blacklisted by a random guy I don't remember ever seeing or talking to. Especially because they are having a bad day. But as I said, it's a free site, more power to you :)
(Idk if you maybe read my original comment in a wrong way. I do use grid mode + one click entry with pop-up description, but only to save the time of opening new tabs, but that's not much with my <50 giveaways seen. A bit auestionable choice while haven't having time to play anything for two weeks. Anyways, you do you. I'm not the one to judge)
Have a better day!

Especially because they are having a bad day.

given the rant you posted, i think you should have a day off. 😅

Someone ought to go and work, can't.
I don't care about being blacklisted. I care about people writing silly things then getting pissy when someone dares to respond in a different way than they expect it.
Or when others chime in with 'you wrote more than I like to read, you surely upset about one specific thing you barely talk about.' But you know it best because you care enough to get into discussions but never enough to have a conversation. Aren't you a tad bored of it? :/ mocking, no content, no commitment to a topic, and joking about people caring about things, baited in but adding nothing to it besides the Mully smugness of slight nihilism?

Sorry for the tone of my previous comment, took it in a wrong way. Yes, I genuinely need a day off, would be great today, will be tomorrow. I mean not caring about blacklists that I don't mind being blacklisted, and won't spend energy even checking if I'm blacklisted, or talk someone out of their decision. I'm still allowed to talk, discuss and rant about it, just like talking about religion while not wanting to convert anyone
I hope this a good, to the point, less dickish reaction/reply. It's better to own up my foolishness and apologize about it and correct it. So I just leave the other comment up too.

If it makes you feel any better, there is a user (I'm sorry, but I've forgotten their name), who will make a public giveaway for a game, and then make a second, invite-only giveaway for the same game (with the exact same level requirements). Then, the invite-only giveaway will be linked into the comment section of the public giveaway.
If I recall correctly, he stated that--based on comparing the numbers of entrants of each the two giveaways--an average of about 17% of those who entered the public giveaway entered the invite-only one.

However, at least one of those was me, who entered one of them, but ran out of points before entering the second. The giveaway had ended before I checked back with the intention of entering the other.

Talgaby does that ocassionally, and a few others do simpler puzzles that are easy to find if someone reads the description.

Permalink

Not only Talgaby do that.

2 or 3 other ones too and the named 17% is on the max., at avaerage the entries are at 10 - 12%

I guess I could always do a lower-value giveaway with a higher-value invite-only giveaway inside, and see how that works out...
...or something.

Different GA's aren't effective for testings because user that can enter the first maybe can't enter the second.

Only 2x the same GA work for a right result.
But without to do the test you can calculate that around 10% at average, that enter a GA, read the description yes the statistics are so bad (at each and every test i seen in the last 12 months).

If you see/thought a reason because so much people use the ESGST and other scripts is your own thing.

I've done that a few times. I've never seen it as high as 17%, though.

This one was 5.6% (12 / 216).

This one was 8.7% (92 / 1,055).

Conclusion: most people do not read giveaway descriptions.

Well, that is similar to what I've been doing (was a little bit more generous with my last round of giveaways), and I agree, I don't use SGTools, or any extensions for that matter.
