tons of people playng is in NO WAY indication that something is not a scam. Most famous money scams in history had tens-hundreds of thousands people involved, all of them assuming the same 'there are so many people there, it cannot be a scam'. All pyramid schemes, all 30% return yearly investments and so on and on.

You can put the name of the site in your OP, remove any referral it might have as guideline of SG doesn't allow it =
It doesn't "smell right" when you say
"asked to join.. and pass me some in game gold and buy something for him"
But it wouldn't automatically make it a scam.
