I'm not sure I get the purpose of whitelisting, unless someones prefers creating whitelist-only GAs. I don't intend to do those kinds of GAs, so I feel whitelisting would be the equivalent of "like me to like you back" and I avoid SNS like the plague.

Is it an untold requirement of SG or something, or can I go on with 0 whitelists and still consider myself a nice person?

You can go with 0, nothing wrong with it.
You can also use whitelist to add some people for multi group giveaways for example (meaning people that aren't already in the groups).

I haven't done any group giveaways, but it's good to know.

If you don't intend to create any whitelist giveaways, than there's no reason you should whitelist anyone. There's nothing wrong about having an empty whitelist.

[EDIT] Also I don't think it's possible to find a difference between people who haven't whitelisted anyone and people who haven't created any whitelist giveaways.

Whitelisting is a popularity contest to some people, or you can simply whitelist people who you consider helpful in the community.

I'd rather keep it at 0, than have people say "why not me?"...

That's why you only whitelist people who help you out in some way. If you use any of the scripts available, consider whitelisting the creator of it. Mod helps you out frequently with tickets, whitelist them, etc.

I'll keep that in mind, it's a nice way to say thank you if you use someone's effort, that's true.

If people start saying something like that it's a good reason to start using the other popular list on SG

Probably, so I'd rather not get involved altogether.

You can white (and black) list anyone you want.

I use my whitelist for people I want to say thanks to (either for doing stuff for the community, beeing nice/helpful or giving way more than the take, etc.).
But I mostly do no whitelist only GAs. Instead I just include them, when I am making a GA for a group (as long as group rules allow it).

Oh, and if you care about CV and have some game you want to give to a group but are not sure you will reach 5 entries, you can include whitelist and add people if neccessary.

The whitelist is a nice feature, I used for people I trust. And this people are happy because they have more chances to win a game. :)

If you do whitelist GAs, it makes sense. :-)

People appreciate getting whitelisted, since it gives them feedback that the community likes their "work" (or giveaways) here.
It also gives you the best control who gets a chance to win your games and a decent chance that some people whitelist in return when you are giving away something interesting.
Personally I use the WL to invite people to the giveaways for my primary (invite only) group.

If I decide to do invite only, I'll start whitelisting, but I don't think I will. We each have our GA style. :-)

Nobody's forcing you to do anything of the sort. I think it's better to be conservative with whitelist usage anyway, since I've seen a lot of people whitelist for very silly reasons. Then again, I'm also very against people using the blacklist (at all), so as long as you hold back with the latter, I think you're one of the nicer people in my book :)

Thanks. :-)

I'll only blacklist if I see something that really calls for it, and I hope to keep my W/B at zero, if I can help it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I reserve my blacklist exclusively for cases of harassment.

For example, I had a few people chew me out for not sending the game they won the moment the giveaway ended. Aside from that being incredibly rude and against the rules, my thought is that giveaway creators are being generous with giving away games, and thus should be met with respect and appreciation in return. If you harass the giveaway creator and treat them like a deadbeat dad that owes you money, then you don't deserve to benefit from their generosity.

You don't have to use whitelists or blacklists. It's just a way for people to know you appreciate them or what they are doing on the site. It gives them an advantage if you ever do decide to do whitelist giveaways. You could add people you like to a whitelist and do whitelist giveaways later, or never add anyone. Doesn't make you any less of a member :P

I whiltelist people when I find out that they whitelisted me and/or when I win someone's giveaway. I rarely do WL giveaways since I'm kinda worried wether they will get 5 entries lol I mean I WL'd over 100 people but the games I give are literally bundled trashes

People have WL me but it's not like I did something extraordinary, and also I didn't find a way to see who it was, so I just appreciate them in my heart. :-)

I sometimes come across some giveaways that have the heart sign, often together with groups so I check wether I'm part of these groups if not then I'm WL'd hahaha

That need to get 5 entries to get credit on a group giveaway is a place where whitelisting comes in handy: if your bundletrash group giveaway comes up short but you thought to add your whitelist when creating the giveaway, you can visit the "perpetual I-need-5 thread" to find one or more people wanting to win your giveaway, and then whitelist them so they can join your giveaway.

It's fine to have an empty whitelist. Nothing wrong with it. I always feel a bit weird when people say "whitelisted", I kinda feel like they expect that I return the favor, which I rarely do without lengthy interaction first. However, I sometimes tell people when I whitelist them and usually say why, which I hope feels less like I expect a whitelist in return.

Personally, I have a system where I tally points. If someone is nice or helpful (or really funny) they get +0.1 to (theoretically) +5.0 points, and when they reach 5.0 they're whitelisted. Blacklists work the same way, but negative behavior (rudeness, bigotry, cheating, etc.) warrants negative points. There is one member I can think of that went from a positive score to negative, and is now back to positive again. There's one member who I've decided to keep at -4.99, just shy of a blacklist, but my heart is warming to him, so maybe I'll restart him at 0 and see where it takes him. There's also the recent case where someone went from 0 to +4.99 just for knowing MTNN. So there is a kinda fluidity in the system.
I've started to keep track of why I whitelist or blacklist people, as well as blacklisting date, so I can go back and check if they've redeemed themselves.

I'd rip my hair out trying to be fair to everyone, but I like your system.

I mainly go with my gut feeling regarding the points. I can't imagine ranking behavior or the points it would warrant in some sort of list in order to keep it fair.

If you don't ever plan on doing WL giveaways, then there's no reason at all for you to white-list people.

How you use your whitelist/blacklist (if at all) is entirely up to you - there's no right or wrong way to use them - and don't let anyone tell you differently (and some will try).

This is how I choose to use the whitlist system.

I do sporatic group and non group giveaways.

My white-lists is simply a "Thank You" to anyone I place on it for whatever nice thing(s) I've noticed they have done in the SG or Steam communities.
Those people are automatically added to most group and all public giveaway I create.
That simply gives them the opprotunity to get another free game.

I use the blacklist much the same way, but based on my judgment of whatever sh*tnanigans I've picked up on from them.

if you want to do that, then just do that

Honestly, why so many they must do something or require someone to clarify why they BL or WL............. it call personal choice, you can BL everybody, or WL no one, that your choice, no one have the right to question about it

I also have an empty whitelist. xD I want to give away games to everyone without setting special requirements. Others may do it, but I don't. I don't like being selective. But I'm not considered a nice person anyway. :P

Not so much about being selective, but appreciating certain people how they contribute.

And that's what selective means. o.O
Selective: relating to or involving the selection of the most suitable or best qualified.
So, it's about choosing people you want to include and excluding people that don't fit the requirements you have set.
Others may only whitelist their friends, others only level 10 users, others only people from Dominican Republic, others only white people, others only people that have never won anything, others only users with a username that starts with L, and the list goes on and on.

I prefer to leave my GAs open for everyone, too. Some people want to be more selective, and it's ok, I just prefer it this way.

The only time I have people on my whitelist temporarily is when I do "if you prove you played these games, you can get their sequel/spin-off" mini events. Essentially, I am using it as a leak-proof invite-only category.

I mean, they won't know you whitelisted them so you don't have to worry about this "like for like" thing.

Everyone has their own reasons for whitelist/blacklist, I simply whitelist people who seem nice on forum, usually people I interacted with at some point. I don't do WL giveaways right now but if I decide to create some in the future I'll have sure I WANT these people to win it.
So if you wanna go with 0 it's completely fine, your whitelist, your rules.

I make my WL as the list of people from which i won something and sometimes i want to give something back, so i make WL giveaway.
Almost like a group when you try maintina good ratio, you win something and you give something back.
But nothing bad on 0 WL i suppose. ;)

If you have nobody on your whitelist, you are a pretty terrible person. Don't you know anyone you like more than most people? How about all those nice people who whitelisted you? What's wrong with you?

If you have nobody on your blacklist, though, you're a monster. The world is full of people who don't deserve a chance at your gifts, and you're just allowing them to potentially win stuff. Have you no shame?

And yes, obviously I'm kidding. I should know.
