SHAN GUI IS BACK \o/

Old revoked keys should be working once again! :3

(Text below is no longer up-to-date, as keys got reactivated. I kept it for archival purposes only)

If you have any keys, e.g. from Tokyo Anime, you can try to redeem them to find out they're all invalid. So I suggest to avoid making giveaways, if you planned to (best to remove invalid keys or put them on special list).

Probably trustworthy source: http://tieba.baidu.com/p/4540865834

Translated:

Because the developer company didn't receive the payment from publisher in the past one year, and all developers are kicked from Steamworks group, so the developers are not able to update the game and have to cancel the support. So the developer company created a DCMA ticket to Steam and the game is removed.
Now the developer company is contacting Valve to get the distribution rights back and make the game back to Steam. The developer company will stop the cooperation with former publisher.

Previous theories (which seem to make sense considering above):
Something happened
Another theory - DMCA

It's sad when you see this kinda things happening, so many people angry, devs that may give up, publishers that don't give a f*ck.
Recently this seem to be happening every 2 or 3 weeks for a random indie game, you never know who's next.

That's what you get for buying a Chinar VN in a "Tokyo Anime" bundle I guess.

More seriously, this is perhaps a similar case as that one indie dev in portugal who couldn't figure out how to receive payments from Valve either, so set his game to $100, so no one would buy it instead of disabling the store page like normal. (apparently he couldn't figure that one out either?) "Snow" something, iir.

no, his bank took horrendous fees for those transactions surpassing the amount given. A case of worst bank ever.

I know the story.

This guy is too dumb to figure out how to manage his payments and bank account vs. no one else has ever had this problem? - I'll go with that one guy in particular is an idiot.

Supposedly he has a publisher anyway. It's probably just "a front" for himself, but they should have been the ones paying him if it was an actual company. The only game under that label is this one, so I suspect it's jsut the one guy anyway.

How awful if what has been posted is true -- ie, publishers screwing devs out of money.

Also, I might be a bit concerned about the numerous reports of trojan in the .exe. While it may indeed be a false positive, too many people are way too trusting that Valve would actually have the capability or desire to audit every line of code in the tens of thousands of games submitted to them for distribution. I find it fairly probable that at least one of the games on their servers actually has some malicious code in it... particularly when there are some very unscrupulous devs and publishers out there and the ease with which they can get games on the service.

And we would be(unknowingly) literally buying a virus XD
You know, pay so we can screw your PC.

It's actually a very clever delivery vector since there is almost unanimous trust and poor security practices amongst the majority of Steam users. People somehow believe that Valve would never let a virus on their service, but it is stated in their terms of service that they do not accept liability or guarantee that their games are virus-free:

Section 7-C of Steam user agreement:

C. NO GUARANTEES
NEITHER VALVE, VALVE EU NOR THEIR AFFILIATES GUARANTEE CONTINUOUS, ERROR-FREE, VIRUS-FREE OR SECURE OPERATION AND ACCESS TO STEAM, THE CONTENT AND SERVICES, YOUR ACCOUNT AND/OR YOUR SUBSCRIPTIONS(S) OR ANY INFORMATION AVAILABLE IN CONNECTION THEREWITH.

There is absolutely no way that Valve is auditing all the games that they have on their servers, and people believe that if they pay for something it is going to be virus-free so they will just ignore any warnings they get. A very psychologically clever delivery vector.

At least we know that a big company wouldn't do it because of the backlash that would obviously fall on them.
But a shady indie dev that nobody knows... paraniod mode on

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Actually big companies did it all the time with invasive DRM -- but they acknowledged that they were distributing malware with their games. ;-)

Truly though, it's not so much paranoia as just good sense to be wary of any executable that is run on your system. People need to realize that a good virus is an undetectable virus (particularly where botnets are concerned). Publisher/developer reputation means a lot here, and there are a lot of games on Steam that come from rather iffy sources.

Yeah, not completely sure what you're talking about.
My comment was generalistic, and I was talking about the possibility of a dev uploading an infected file.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

So it IS a false positive then? I was just installing Shan Gui right now and my Norton said it detected a trojan. The installation still seems to be continuing, however. Which is good, as I want to play the game.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's not definitive, but there was one person that posted they ran the game in a VM and then checked the VM with their particular antivirus and after running it and it came back clean. Of course, you are relying on a random post on Steam for this information. I'd probably give it about 90% odds that it is a false positive given what I know about it, but I personally won't be running it on my main machine due to the 10% possibility that it contains malware (mostly on account of the unknown status and reliability of the publisher/developer due to the strange status of the game's availability). I keep a separate non-networked test machine for these sorts of files that I am a little iffy about. Obviously not everyone is able to do the same, so it comes down to your risk tolerance -- just remember, there is a slightly elevated risk that you could pick up some undetectable malware if you decide to run the game.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Thanks for all the information.:)

There were a lot of people that gave reviews at Steam. You would think that if there was a virus that one of them would have said they got hit with it (not just a false positive).

I guess I've got the game in my Library and even though the keys are invalid (for now) it won't be getting removed from my library and I can play it when there is more certainly (say, if whatever is going on right now gets resolved and it gets put back on Steam).

Have a great night, thekuribo!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Just want to say that positive reviews does not mean that they haven't been infected. Again, a good virus is an undetectable virus, and particularly with things like botnets it makes it most efficient to hide any activity as pretty benign so as not to make the user suspicious. Viruses have come a long way since they were used primarily to annoy/cause disturbance, and the best ones these days do not inconvenience their hosts in a way that makes them suspicious of their presence.

What a shame. Thank goodness I won a GA for Shan Gui just a couple of days ago.

Supposedly the publisher bailed out on the dev, and then took the game down from the Steam store. But what's weird is that Shan Gui is a Greenlight game, so why did the dev use a publisher to begin with?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Better question is why they decided to invalidate all the keys, it's not usual - games are getting removed from store, for various reasons, but keys are usually left untouched. Developers can even issue more keys AFTER their game is taken off the store.

Actually, the non-payment theory and DMCA theory could both be true. If I were a dev getting screwed over by a publisher, I would definitely consider submitting a DMCA complaint claiming that since the publisher hasn't upheld their end of the contract, they have no legal right to distribute my game. I would also try to get all the outstanding keys canceled so that the publisher takes the heat from angry buyers.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Makes sense and I wouldn't be shocked if that's the true version - it even makes sense considering revocation of all the keys, because developer was salty and wanted to make sure that publisher won't sell any content of his game anymore, including everything what could be revoked. I wonder if we ever learn the truth.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

But after you acquire the distribution right yourself, you need to replace those revoked keys. If not, the heat is on your side.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Not really, no. If I were to sell you a key for Fallout 4 and Bethesda revokes it because I never paid Bethesda, Bethesda is under absolutely no obligation to replace your key. You need to go to the place you bought it from, not whoever has the rights to distribute it.
