Those shelves might be useful if you ever accidentally swallow your wedding ring!
On topic though, over and no shelf for me.

I noticed that a few years ago on a student exchange program in Germany, I was staying in someone else's house. I assumed they had put the toilet in backwards by mistake! I ended up sitting right at the back of the toilet when I used it, couldn't understand what that shelf was for, totally hated it.

I thought it was the standard for all toilets to have a brass pipe at the back of the bowl which sprays water to your butt when turned on. That way, you can wash your butt before wiping it, which is imo exactly the way it should be.
I'm surprised that the designs are different in other parts of the world. Your butts deserve better.

You go over the waterfall, not under it. It's so much easier to use that way.

I'm not arguing anything, I'm stating a fact. There are two ways to orient the roll: 1) Such that the end of the roll may be pulled down from in front of the roll (aka 'over') and 2) the wrong way.

Over, for not having to touch the wall behind it.

Comparing under to over is like comparing XBone to PS3.
Accually no. PC master race. We don't use a holder.

Mine sit on the back of the bowl. The Costco super size rolls wont fit in the little groove.

It's still either clockwise or counter-clockwise. Deal with it.

I'm an under supporter, since I remember seeing an instruction diagram on a new roll of toilet paper in my childhood stating the way to set it up.
