That also didn't scare, just worried that after 1 minute trying to connect, it could fail. So patiently and worried listening the tones to see if they end with the good end "melody" or with the wrong end. So not scaring, but painful!!! We can call it a not hurting torture.

It's like receiving a message through the cosmos from some ancient aliens. ;)

+1. THAT was the scary shit. The shutting down sound was more iconic than it could ever be scary. Only time it ever scared me was when my volume was a liiittlee too high.

The amount of times I've jumped when someone else started up the modem.

What was even worse is when the sound came from me I wasn't even meant to be on the internet half the time and this thing broadcast my actions through the entire house.

Exactly! The advent of ISDN was such a blessing. No more piling clothes on the modem to muffle the sound.

The only reason that was scary is thinking how much I paid for a US Robotics that couldn't handshake any decent connection speed. They sent me an EPROM to swap in, no deal. Support was useless and a dick. Then I got a no name chinese V90 modem for much less and it worked just fine.

US Robotics = shite.

I wouldn't say scare, but hearing that noise randomly does tend to make my heart skip a beat. Makes me think my computer is about to crash. As a matter of fact, I actually disabled the "shut down" noise from my current computer (win7) just so I never have to hear it... It's weird
-edit-
Yep, that sound still has that effect to this day... The pain of working on something for hours, then suddenly, shut down sound...

Surprisingly enough, you're not alone. I was scared of the shutting down sound to the point where it appeared in my nightmares.

LOL, my mind jumped to same conclusion... "XP? Child? Wtf?" :P
If XP shutting down sound scared him, i guess the loading sound of a ZX Spectrum would have given him chronic nigtmares had he owned one. :P

P.S.: Win 95 did scare me shutting down, not because of its sound, but because i feared for my hard drive's integrity, everytime... :/

I've gone to lenghts explaining the dreads of floppy disks on a recen thread, actually. :)

Like copying a game from one of my high-school's PCs to 20 of them, only to get a CRC error on the 19th when trying to copying it from the floppies to my PC. Please don't remind me. :P

I got my first computer at the age of approx 9, can't really remember exactly but my first OS was Win 95.
I saved up for it all by myself (never spent a cent from what I got form family on birthdays, for visits and so on) and I was sooo proud <3

I was never scared of the various sounds and noises computers make. I was, however, scared of some graphical errors. You know, the ones where the screen goes mostly black with only distorted shapes of the textures and the likes. That's fucking scary.
