Hello SG people (also cats, aliens, monsters - you know who you are!)

So a few hours ago I realized I just hit 1 whole year of using this cool site! Yay for me!

It's rare for me to persistently go back to one, somewhat social site, and it's not just because I'm getting free games.
We got such a diverse community here. A lot of creative, awesome, nice and rude (I like both types! Free speech bitches!) individuals.
Before I started using SG I've never tried to create online friendships. I never spent any money on digital friends to make them happy.
SG changed all of that.
I'm getting mad, happy, sad, excited, inspired and everything in the emotion spectrum from being here. Mostly reading though :)
So thanks everyone, I mean it! :D

Well now, let's get this going:
In celebration of this occasion I've picked 3 games that are constantly on users wishlists.

  • Choose the one you want most and I'll create a private giveaway and share it in this thread.
  • There will be no level or other restrictions, but using SGtools I'll cap it to 250 entries.

Countdown to the start of the giveaway!

Also, my super special group (Secret Sauce) will get the 2 other games.

Instead of thanking me or just bumping the thread - tell me the 3 best TV series and 3 best movies for 2015! Extra points if you can explain why! (like a mini-review) for at least one of them.

I'll pick 25 users here to invite to Secret Sauce based on their recommendations so they'll be able to enter the 2 other giveaways (and future ones)!

Edit: My fault for not being clear enough - I meant top 3 movies/series of 2015, not those you catch up with 10 years later :) Sorry!

I'll still consider those who invested time and thought into their comments.

I don't watch a lot of TV or movies, so I'll go with ones I remember:

The Imitation Game: An important story that no one knows about, told in a way that works. It's about Alan Turing, how he invented the computer, and how he got castrated.
The Theory of Everything: Biopic about Steven Hawkins. Better than you'd expect a biopic about Steven Hawkins to be
Star Wars: Pretty much rehashes/reworks the plot of the first movie. Which is a good thing.

American Horror Story: Hotel - combines tropes from horror movies with scripted dramas, taking the best of both worlds (but toning down the scare and gore somewhat)
Orange is the New Black - A drama set in a women's prison. The vignettes on how each woman got there makes you wonder about criminal justice.
X-Files (actually from 2016, but I hope it counts): on average, better than the original series was. Reminds you of everything that was good about the original series, without bringing up the parts best forgotten.

Don't know why I voted for Kerbal, I'd rather play Mordor

3 Best Shows I Watched:

  • Daredevil
  • Sense8
  • Game of Thrones

3 Best Movies:

  • Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens
  • The Martian
  • Ex Machina

Perhaps the most problematic of these is Sense8. I vote it among the best mostly because I saw it trying to do something very different with its story-telling that was distinctly non-Hollywood in terms of casting, locations, and a perception that not everything amazing happens in the USA. However it's first season suffered because you had to get the "origin" stories of the eight different characters. That didn't leave much time for the villain. Hopefully season two gets us on the path of ratcheting up the conflict.

I thought Ex Machina was weird, and slightly disatisfying in the end. Martian was good. Thought Star Wars plot line was a little unoriginal, but overall a decent movie. Daredevil is the best tho :D

Thanks for the interesting comment about Sense8, I watched some of it and it has its problems but it's intriguing nonetheless. You've made me want to finish watching it.

TV Shows

  1. The Office (U.S.) - This is the most comforting show I have ever watched. It's really easy watching and I like to have it on in the background if I'm doing something that I can multitask. Every episode is interesting and I just love it.
  2. Jessica Jones - I had a bit of mixed feelings while watching this but in the end it was overall pretty amazing. Like every character seems important and real, especially the main character.
  3. River - This was short but soooo good. I don't know what to say without spoilers. The acting is just fantastic though.

I rarely watch movies and only one sticks with me from last year.

  1. Ex Machina - Robots are great and this movie leaves you with so many questions to think about afterwards. I feel like there's a lot of different interpretations and I still think about it sometimes.

River - I remember the main actor, Stellan Skarsgård, from a movie I really liked "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" - highly recommended if you haven't seen it. He was really good there and the show premise sounds right up my alley. Thanks :)

TV:

  • Jessica Jones. It's simply awesome.
  • The Expanse. One of the best SciFi shows I've ever seen. Went in with low expectations cause it is by Syfy, and was totally blown away.
  • Daredevil. See Jessica Jones :p

Movies:

  • The Martian. Best movie. Shoulda been up for Best Picture, not Best Comedy (though it was funnier than the others that were nominated for best Comedy..)
  • Ex Machina. This would be hit and miss for most people, for me it was a hit.
  • Sicario. Again hit and miss with a lot of people, but who doesn't love Emily Blunt being a badass?

I really want Mordor. I wanted to get it during the sale, but I just couldn't find the money :(

An important update:
SGTools shows all 250 entries are taken, but as some noted, ~35 users didn't enter. I've waited to see if this issue will be resolved (I thought that maybe it's a lack of points problem) but seeing now only 5 hours left and this number remains static, I'm going to fix this issue.
I guess people didn't realize that by using this link, even if they don't enter, they take the place of someone who will enter.

To fix this situation, each hour from now until the GA is over, I'll open the gates for 5 users (25 in total) for several minutes at a time.

So pay close attention and you may get yourself an entry!

Gotta love SGT for this feature

TL;DR - If you haven't had a chance to enter, check Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor giveaway often and get your F5 ready for a chance to get in!

Voted for Shadow of Mordor :D

The shows that really seem to stand out in my head right now are ones that I've seen mentioned:

Jessica Jones (badass, awesome, frustrating at times, happy & sad moments, David Tennant plays an awesome role in this show can make you feel bad for him one moment and HATE him with a passion the next (I hate to love him in the role, but he does it so well!)
Daredevil (just... YES. everything we've wanted in a daredevil thing but never gotten, dark, awesome, some happy moments, sad moments... a show that makes you feel for the bad guy at times even while you still wanna punch them, and sometimes makes you wanna punch the good guys too lol.)
The Expanse (went into this not knowing what to expect, but really liking it so far - I'm not totally up to date - it's based on a series of books which I'm gonna get around to reading one day, but the show itself has been pretty great so far, a few twists and questions and looks nice too.)

Damn, I wrote a long comment and it was deleted. Basically, I agree with everything you said. JJ and DD were some of the best series to come out in 2015, and the best comic series I ever watched. I will check out The Expanse since I haven't seen a good Sci-Fi series in a while.

TV shows (~2014/2016) :

  • Marco Polo : because it's so well filmed + kung-fu + Kubilai Khan + armies of mongols !
It's my favorite currently, you really should try it.
  • The Magicians : it looks like Harry Potter at university. There is only 5 episodes (2016) currently, worth the try.
  • Lucifer : Lucifer as main character, weird ? Yes, but it works so well. This lucifer don't hide his name, and can be super pretentious and funny in same time. New tv show too, 5 episodes currently.

There isn't lot of occult in Lucifer. In this show, Lucifer live on earth. He met a police woman who can resist his powers. Since, he's like obsessed by her and he want to learn more about her, that's why he follow her during her investigations. Lucifer solves crimes... sounds weird again, but it's fun to see the guilty fear him when they understand that he is really THE Lucifer ^^

Don't skip Marco Polo, this tv show was surprislingly great. This tv show is more about the mongol empire than Marco Polo himself. His name is here to sell I guess.

And thank you for the invite :)

Well, it's one of the funniest series I've seen.
It's goofy, self-deprecating, absurd, weird (in the good way) and very musical!. "Flight of the Conchords" was an actual band with the same name, so they play an exaggerated version of themselves. And it's HBO which is synonymous with quality in my book.

TV series 2015:

  1. "Limitless". Becaurse it like film.
  2. "Into the Badlands". Good post apocalypse TV series. Have some minuses, but much more pluses for me.
  3. "The Expanse". Loving good TV series about cosmos, like: Firefly, Babylon 5, Stargate franshise.

Movies 2015:

  1. "Страна ОЗ". Russian movie.
  2. "The Intern". Robert De Niro still really cool.
  3. "The Martian". Matt Damon was not so bad. But i liked more "Gravity" with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney.

I own all of them, and of them, I liked the Long Dark the most. I have over 100 hours in it, and I have 1 achievement left to get - and this is just early access sandbox. I'm really looking forward to story mode, as the voice actor lineup is excellent. But the other two are really good games too so whichever you choose the winner is lucky :D

Best 3 TV Series I watched in 2015:

Jessica Jones
Better Call Saul
Daredevil

Hmm, two superhero shows. I didn't put things like Game of Thrones since it's a much older show, so I picked three that actually came out in 2015. I could actually make a list of 10+ shows I would give a solid 8 or 9 in 2015.

Top 3 Movies of 2015

The Martian
Ant Man
Star Wars

I don't watch a lot of movies though and thought it was a slow year for movies. I watch mostly TV series.

Best movies and series from 2015? Hard question really.
I'll go with some common choices as 2015 (for me peronaly) was not so good to cinema. So...
Inside out - not really amazing but still nice to watch. Story is linear and simple but the main strenght of the movie comes from characters interactions. So... Yes.
The Martian - It was better then i was expecting it to be. Still... Story was kinda simple (SCIENCE and MATH) but the whole movie was well made. So Yes.
And for the third nominee... I'm not really sure. I'll go with Sicario and its brutality. Again story itself was not so strong but the way whole picture was captured. It is very climatic. Yes.
And TV series:
Narcos - well played, well captured. You can feel the power of money and drugs. Yes.
Better Call Saul - I was worried at first if it could live up to the hype left up by Breaking Bad. It could and it did. Really nice show. Not the best out there but still good.
Bloodline - first episodes were kinda boring but later one it got to me. Great show with very good cast. Really. And that openning music. Yes.
As for others i've seen: Into the Badlands(Too much focus on teen character :P), Jessica Jones (Great villan - not much else to say), Ash vs. Evil Dead (kinda nice but nothing out of the ordinary), Daredevil (kinda meh for me. Tell no one please), Limitless (Still waiting for that darker tones that were suppoused to happen. I doubt it), Fortitude (weird ending but i can recommend it too), American Horror Story: Hotel (kinda meh), The Last Kingdom (cheaper version of vikings but with more medieval feel to it), Scream Queens (so stupid it was not bad at all), Heroes Reborn (IT MADE ME SO SAD. So weak...), The Magicians (I'm afraid it wont get better :< Still waiting - for now meh with minus).

Film

Chappie: So, the film is presented as somewhat of a mess. Many critics didn't care for that approach, over the usual straightforward, easy-to-grasp action film, and dismissed it as being sloppy- when in fact, the messy feeling is polished and comes across as entirely intentional, a sort of metaphor for life itself.
It's not a film that's going to blow your mind- it stays away from the more psychological and existential aspects of its topic- or a film that's going to give you the mindless non-stop mess of a Michael Bay film. This is a film that tosses aside both mindless action and the deeper question of 'What does if mean to be human' to instead make a statement: "THIS is what it means to be human: It's ugly, it's messy, it's stupid, but this is what we are [through the eyes of a robot]."

Certainly, it's a film some will like, and others will dislike- though in my case, both me and all my friends who watched it quite enjoyed it.
Or, rather: This is what a mindless action film looks like, to people who want actual substance underlying the action.

Unfortunately, this is the only film I watched in 2015 that I can actually recommend.
I'll try and get some more watching done soon! =O

TV

TV, on the other hand, has been fantastic this year.
I'll assume you mean western live-action and ignore cartoons, anime, and (from the perspective of the US) foreign.. though truly, an excellent selection among those, as well.
Even then, limiting myself to three series.. whew, this'll be a challenge.

Hands down, though, the best has got to be:

The Last Kingdom (Britain: BBC 2 / US: BBC America)
Richness of story and setting, colorful characters, based on novels, and an everybody-dies mentality?
Hey, it's Game of Thrones!

But where GoT emphasizes complex politics, has constant inclusion of low magic elements, and a vast web of notable characters, TLK emphasizes the story of a single hero and his evolution over time, in a historically-based England setting.

It's a more focused affair, with a different style than GoT- but yet, still similar enough in flavor that it'd likely appeal to many of the show's fans.

The Expanse (US: SyFy)
Ah, a proper space opera. Mystery, action, suspense, politics, and more.
Often jumping character perspectives, The Expanse slowly builds up a narrative of intrigue and a slow development toward inevitable, large-scale climax.
From the main three perspectives alone, the show manages to combine Star Trek style adventure and discovery with Battlestar Galactica style politics and warfare with noir-flavored detective work..
Really, it's a beautiful blend of sci-fi flavors- though it's more cerebral than action-packed, and'll likely bore viewers more interested in non-stop action.

Killjoys (Canada: Space / US: SyFy)
If you want an action-packed space adventure, this is the one to go to.
Discarding the complexity and persistent long-term-plot-development of The Expanse, Killjoys has more of a one episode-one story approach. Add in the small crew perspective, and it feels reminiscent of shows like Firefly- there's a larger perspective to the universe, and they're just a small part of it, but they're a part that'll ultimately have great effect on the rest.

Stylish, in a future-grunge kind of way, Killjoys delivers constant action and charm and a constant feeling of discovery, but still leaves room for dipping into politics, intrigue, and character development, while slowly revealing more and more of the main plotline.

PS: Like everyone else above, I'm going to assert that you should watch Jessica Jones [if you haven't already].
It's less polished and rich in content than the shows I ended up listing, but it's very unique in tone and topic and approach, the acting is compelling, and it'll probably stick with you more than any of the shows I listed above.

I would say one of the best movies I ever saw 2015 was: The Martian. The novel is also great if you like reading.
I'm sure you know of it.

Other movies I believe is just currently avaible where I live, who knows there might be an english version soon, it's called, where I live: En man som heter Ove. A comdian film about a man who does several attempts to commit suicide to see his wife again.

I don't know mcuh more to reccomend, I usually just draw and play games.

Best 3 movies watched in 2015, that would be Godzilla, Jurrasic World and uhm.... .... .... Jack the giant slayer (you said watched not that came out in that year :P)

Jurrasic world was cool, loved seeing a old movie franchise getting a new release, plus its about DINOSAURS!!!! I love dinosaurs!!!! , but the movie is dissapointing in the sense of "what can the NEXT one go about then"

Best 3 series's I've watched would be

Once Upon A Time (starting watching last year, loved it)

Hunter x Hunter (One of my favourite animes after watching it last year)
-the story follows the main character, no matter whats going on you don't see the ending of this that isn't relevant to the main character, it was a really unique story telling method which I haven't seen before, a must much!

Lovestage (Super cute gay anime :P)
-well yeah, its a yaoi anime :P about a guy that was forced to dress as a girl in a commercial, a boy falls in love with him ,and 10 years later the commercial has a retake with the same cast, once again the guy is forced to wear a dress, and the boy is still inlove with him , its not a cross-dressing anime, the guy HATES having to dress and act like a girl, and the aspect is only present the first 4 or so episodes, and then eventually they fall inlove :P it was a good story

The Long Dark!

I'm afraid I don't watch much tv at all... and when I do I just find something on Netflix (sry) The latest things I watched was The Guild and Supernatural. Both shows are old...
What I will say about SN is it's got great funny episodes (scary content aside) and after running so many seasons, there are far more 'up' moments then down. I really only found it lag through the first half of S6. I feel it's got a fairly good balance of filler and story eps and then when they throw in their funny ones on top of that, all around good watching. At least, I was surprised I enjoyed it.
The Guild idk where I stand on that right now... the style was great .. the problem I have with it was I wanted to laugh more at it and I just didn't. I could see where they were trying to be funny.. I just couldn't get there.

As for movies... I watched quite a few but most of them I'd call watch once (eg. Terminator Genisys, Jupiter Ascending, Mad Max:Fury Road, Jurassic World, Mr. Holmes, Star Wars) The Martian was good, but reminded of a Mars version of Cast Away. But, the best part about watching lots of movies, is that if you watch enough you can just start to appreciate what they have to offer and can enjoy it for what it is... at least that's how I find it to be.
So far I think the thing I watched that I liked best was maybe Amy - though I guess technically it's considered a documentary. It's a story about Amy Winehouse, with footage covering a huge portion of her life.
There are too many I still want to watch like Brooklyn, What We Do In Shadows, Carol.. which I think will all be pretty good.
