Don't you agree? It's a pain to always get a code for every site that supports steam you go on.

You can't access most of the community features if you disable it. They are forcing you to use it.

And you can't trade if it's disabled.

My account is ALREADY safe without Steam guard. Just keep your password long and don't tell it anyone. If you don't do something that extremely stupid you don't get your account stolen. At least that works for me.

Extra security is always good, though. It doesn't take very long to get through SteamGuard, either.

Extra security is good, but forcing them everyone and disabling community features is not.

1 decade ago

Comment has been collapsed.

Oh, of course it's not. I disagree on the disabling community features, but I agree on the supporting security. Of course, if people feel safe enough, they should be allowed to disable it.

Better than getting your account stolen.

Given the amount of money my Steam account represents, I'm more than happy to suffer 30 seconds of inconvenience in return for the added security.

I definitely agree with that. Steam has one of the most secure systems out there right now. Then again, I'm pretty sure that my email provider could easily hack into it. :/

To get to Steam, Steam guard send an OTP to my Gmail. Gmail send and OTP to my phone.

30 seconds to verify your account can save you 30 days of dealing with Steam "support" if your acc gets stolen.

Think about that.

It's a great protection system and worth it for lots of people who did put loads of money on their account. If you hate it so much just disable it and enjoy getting your account hacked from a simple keylogger or such..

E-mail accounts are so much more easily compromised. I really can't see how "SteamGuard" does anything more than request confirmation from an unreliable account.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Pretty simple: Steam did everything to prevent you losing your account. If you lose it, it's your fault or the fault of your email provider. Steam can't prevent idiots from being idiots...

I have no problem with guard, though it's annoying sometimes (I wish I could authenticate my home computer permanently and use guard codes on others), but steam login via website is recently glitching on me. From time to time it refuses proper password until captcha verification is displayed - and then accepts the same password with no hesitation. I hope it's sorted out soon. cause it is extremely frustrating, I get scared that my acc have been stolen every time.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I do NOT agree it is crap. And if you think it's a pain to do so, then you can let yourself get hacked.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't recall ever getting any of my accounts from any website or service hacked, my Runescape account that i have had for about 10 years is still goin and i have never changed the password on it. Steam guard only helps people stupid enough to give out there login info and people who don't take care of their computers and have boatloads of keyloggers, people with more than half a brain don't need it.

But i don't really have an issue with steam guard now that it sometimes remembers my pc rather than before where i had to get the stupid code every time i tried to login on here and every now and then it would decide not to send the code so i had to retry it.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Oh btw, if you ever get your Steam account hacked cause of thinking Steam guard is stupid, don't look for support.

1 decade ago

There is an elementary concept that so far in IT always stayed true. Either something is convenient, or secure, never both at the same time. That goes for everything, encrypted email, virus or firewall protection, OS file security/permissions, bicycle locks, and here Steamguard.

There are so many examples when some people tried to make something secure as well as convenient and it almost everytime backfired. Microsoft Windows is full of those mistakes. Or when security gets centralized so that only one person/server/company has to worry about security for all others... yeah, that always worked well...

So: Be happy that something like steamguard is in place. Users still can screw it up (using same password in steam and your email), but its pretty good as it is.

Last time I got a SteamGuard notice is when I was moving to new laptop or logging in through new browser. No more notice after that.

So if you getting notice every time you log in, perhaps there is something in your system or browser that prevents Steam to identify your computer?

You can shut it off if it's a pain for you. I hope there'd be more security options like mobil messages along with e-mail.
