We are the Borg. Lower your shields and surrender your ships. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile.

The Borg. The ultimate expression of both capitalism and communism. Unrelenting, vicious, unstoppable, strip-mining entire worlds of their populations and resources with a single mind and a single goal. And therefore our mascots for Greed Corp., a game where people destroy the planet to get resources (that they're destroying).

So, to win a copy of the game, answer me this. The above quote is the Borg's standard hail. In "Regeneration", however, the one episode of Star Trek: Enterprise the Borg appeared in, their hail was simply "You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile." This change makes no sense and, while continunity is maintained, it comes only at the cost of making the Borg look ridiculous. Why does that change make the Borg sound stupid?

The best nerd answer (or the exact one I'm looking for) wins the key. In 24 hours, a clue will be posted to send you a little closer in the right direction. 24 hours after that, I'll make the clue even easier.

Clue: Search for Chuck in the field of debris that spans many galaxies.

Winner: SrgColman and MalekTaktak, for getting the closest answers first.

Answer (there's also a video if this is tl;dr (skip to 8:49, but Chuck is awesome and funny and smart and you really should watch this show)):

"The Borg then send the following transmission in its entirety: "You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile." That's the point where I call foul. Yeah, I've heard the excuses, but I don't buy any of them:
1) The Borg were instructed not to identify themselves in the past. So why say anything then?
2) The Borg never identified themselves in Q who or Best of Both Worlds. Right, but their statements were also given substance in those episodes.

See, the reason the phrase is what it is is because of the Borg's nature: they do not recognize the illogic of resisting them. When they first met the Enterprise, all they stated was that they knew the Enterprise's defenses were incapable of stopping them, so they shouldn't resist. In the second, Picard as Locutus was serving to make clear that Borg victory was inevitable; if the head of the best the Federation could bring could be made into the Borg's voice, then his words have all the more meaning. Look back on his remarks, and there is a genuine puzzlement in their question to Worf: "Why do you resist us?" They cannot comprehend that anyone could engage in such clearly pointless behavior, that they would rather throw their lives away than join in the unity and marvel that the collective is. The Borg introduction from First Contact was: "We are the Borg. Lower your shields and surrender your ships. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile." To break this down, the Borg's first statement is to make it clear that defeat is the only possible outcome in the most clear and direct manner possible, by making it clear who they're dealing with. "We are the Borg, you've already lost." Then instructions on what to do, then an explanation of what awaits them. Finally, the Borg add "See point one: we are Borg, don't waste our time." When it became it's final form (which was used throughout Voyager), it was the same idea condensed: We Borg, that means you're toast, don't bother fighting. What this one does instead is take all that away and goes with the catch phrase - I could almost buy that, if they hadn't chopped out the first part. It's the crux of it all, it's their "I'm Rick James, bitch!" If you don't make it clear you're Rick James, nobodies gonna give a shit what meaningless comments come out of your mouth. "You and your friend are coming back to my place," doesn't go over well as an intro, you'll just get maced, trust me. People forget that the Borg think, and so they say things that are relevant. This is a conversation fragment; the Borg might as well have just said "Neaner-neaner-neaner! Gotcha!" It's a sign of just how bad it is when this announcement, rather than inducing dread or fear, leads to Archer's expression of puzzlement, as if the Borg had just spat netspeak at him."

You're right, it does sound stupid. In First Contact, their hail sounded epic. It was meant to strike fear into the heart of the enemy, and this is probably one of the ways they were so successful. The idea was great. The change to "You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile" is so common now that neo-trekkies will often use it at conventions when cosplaying as one of the Borg. Why did it get changed? Rick Berman wrote the story for First Contact, and in Star Trek: Enterprise, Gene Roddenberry was absent having been deceased for about 10 years. The spirit itself wasn't the same, and I'm attributing the Borg's hail to Gene Roddenberry, as he was the true writer. In short, Rick Berman is a tool.

I wouldn't say it makes them sound stupid at all. It would make alot of sense seeing how the Borg are not interested in diplomacy. Id imagine they thought the odds were well in their favor. Wouldnt exactly expect the AI in an RTS to start "diplomacy" or a "peace offering" when its about to pound my ***.

(also lol. ASSimilated childish giggle)

The answer is: It doesn't make Borg sound stupid because the new text is waaay better than the old one. Both statements are supposed to have only informative character as it's about something inevitable and unchangable for the recipent. It's not a threat or silly chit-chat made by most of the Bad Characters. However, the second one has the full content of former message but appears to be more unemotional and unconcerned of it's shortage. It shows fully unnecessity of adding anything more to it. Resistance is futile. You will be asimilated.

Never seen any Star Trek tho, I'm just a fan of this catchphrase :P.

It's stupid because they do not identify themselves as Borg during the hail to the enterprise. I think its because the Borg Queen isn't present so they do not refer to themselves as Borg.

I'd say the first quote makes them sound much more important and badass, like there's an entire legion of them, there's simply no escape wherever you flee to, the Borg will assimilate you anyway, they warn them by telling them to surrender and lower your defenses, Resistance is useless. You are not safe ANYWHERE.

The second quote, to the sounds of it, makes them seem like they're secondary characters, that you never give attention to and never bother to combat. Merely because it's a lot shorter than the original, less elaborated and isn't scary enough, the space people will think of them as background enemies, instead of considering them their greatest menace and their ultimate arch-nemesis.

Not sure if nerdy, but that's what I understood from what you wrote.

First hail sounds more sophisticated, and beyond negotiation. Second hail sounds like roving space pirates. Already have the game, and I don't know anything about Star Trek beyond the basics of recognizing names like "Borg." :)

Star Trek: Enterprise was shit. The Next Generation > Original > Deep Space 9 = Voyager >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Enterprise. The reason the Borg sounded stupid was because the writers for that show were stupid. It was the writer's ignorance that made the Borg sound that way, not the Borg that chose to speak that way.

The first statement tells the people that they have no choice in the matter, but they can still survive if they join the Borg. Once you have been assimilated, you are equal to all other Borg. This tactic is like that used by Roman Empire and other empires as they conquered the world. The second statement just says the Borg are rampaging barbarians who slaughter everything they see mindlessly and do not wish to learn from different cultures.

In my opinion, the first statement is better because of its very sophisticated and harsh statement that leaves no room ambiguity or doubt as to their intentions. It also shows complete dominance and confidence in their belief that they are absolutely superior; the AI has calculated a 100% chance of victory. It also tells the recipients very clearly: "WE are the masters. You will be our slaves."

The second statement is just plain dumb since it's too simple and sounds like something a broken record would say. In addition, it loses the master-slave dynamic that the first statement contains. Furthermore, assimilation usually implies eventual equal status, which the Borg are clearly not interested in granting their newfound property.

Just my two cents. Not sure on whether or not I want the game, though. ^^

"WE are the masters. You will be our slaves."

That isn't how the Borg works. Once you are assimilated, you are one of them. You become equal to the Borg that was there before you and as such are equal to those that follow you as well. It is more like "You will surrender and become one of us. There is no other way."

Well, what I was going for was more of a "You are not worthy in your present state."

As such, they take you and dismantle you kinda to get the best parts, like salvaging gold wiring from a outdated electronic device. It is kind of like assimilation I guess... but to me it's more like they make your descendants be exactly like what they're programmed to be: Perfect.

Drawing on what I can barely remember...

It's stupid because they do not identify themselves as Borg during the hail to the enterprise. I think its because the Borg Queen isn't present so they do not refer to themselves as Borg.

ALSO

I believe, the Borg were instructed not to identify themselves in the past, so why would they use the obvious hail which I'm sure they would have on file somewhere and warnings would go off at the mere mention of assimilation. Why say anything? Resistance is futile so why bother hailing at all?

Also, after pondering it for a while... Its the borgs nature that they are confused that anyone should attempt resistance. To throw away ones life rather than join their union is madness to the Borg. They cannot comprehend that anyone could engage in such clearly pointless behaviour. The first statement makes it clear that defeat is the only possible outcome in the most clear and direct manner possible, by making it clear who they're dealing with. "We are the Borg".

The Borg only want to assimilate and add to their union, hence its stupid to omit the part of the statement that would make people more likely to lay arms down.

I think it's stupid they hail at all. There's no point. If you're going to assimilate your target, why warn/alert them? Just do it. A true AI "faction" wouldn't bother with trivialities like greeting. Their success would have already been calculated in milliseconds and their first shot would come almost instantaneously. You'd already be dead.

A greeting implies diplomacy or a response. Does a robber walk up to you and say, "Hi I'm Dave. Give me your wallet. Resistance is futile." No. He'd point his weapon at you, say "Wallet. Now." and that would be it.

Greed corp is all about harvesting the land for recources, you are asked the question whether you will defend your territory or surrender to your enemies, this is what the Borg are doing, they are taking other people land through shear power, they are using the land for resources and so on, so in other words they are too lazy to harvest their own land so they need to take it away from other people :p , Now to actually answer the question.

The Borg are too 'cocky' (and stupid) they believe that people will be scared of them so their obvious thought is these people will surrender like the rest, we don't even need to loose one of our lives, they are so power hungry and they have that communist thinking, that their is only a one-state party (only one group that can control the world), they are also spreading the Communist Theory by taking over other races 'mind', this is what Russia was trying to do in the 1900s. They are also showing capitalism, by giving them some freedom, they are allowed to surrender and become a Borg if they wanted to.
The first quote shows their power, it basically is telling them that their are millions of us, so you can not escape the only way you can escape is if you become one of us. The second quote shows that the Borg don't even bother thinking that their enemies are anyway close to being able to destroy them, this shows that they do not think, that they are too busy thinking about other stuff. This shows poor war tactics and therefore they are stupid.

When they said their first quote maybe they where not as powerful, they may have just started world dominance, this means that they will be showing more power and they will try and seem scarier and so on. This would of been when they knew people would fight back. The 2nd quote will be when they had more power and when people knew them as being scary and relentless, this would be when most races have surrendered so the Borg will think that anyone will surrender to them.

The whole point of the hail is to intimidate the target into giving up without a fight, thus preserving resources.
There is a slight nuance to the original message that a hopelessly optimistic recipient may grab on to:
"You will adapt to serve us" COULD be interpreted as "You will be our slaves", which sounds much better than "We will invade your very body & soul & bend it to our will".

It was one of the few times the Borg did not identify themselves. This was significant because the Starfleet didn't know the identity of the species at this point. It was just really stupid because people saw it as a ploy by the writers to keep the Borg's unknown to the characters when the Borg normally will identify themselves in their hail.
