Refund / replacement possible? A new one shouldn't be dying so fast.

Torrents and movies, eh? That reminds me of... I dunno... what do they call those...

If you have had it only a few months then you will be able to get a replacement, unless it was a second hand one?

Doesn't matter which brand as it will always be a crapshoot.

Is it external or internal? https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100408011418AAnBHXE
It's not wise downloading to externals.

Also check your hdd with wgdiagnostics http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=612&sid=3, it might take a whole day to run but then you will know if it's really broken.

Then you are basically screwed.

But you can have as many good new WD drives (had 2 bad ones but also alot of good ones) or any type of brand but also a batch of bad ones, it's a gamble.

I can almost bet you it won't do much, if you can't even access your files, there might be a few forensic tools out there that can do a few magic things and even saved me from thinking i had a bad drive but i forgot the names, but you can google it.
From what i remember and my experience (got 9 drives) is an IO error is usually a no go though, only thing you can try is another power supply.

Better copy it if you want to save your data, even if you can "repair" it it will never be 100% safe anymore.

it now disconnects when i try to put a folder on it. Might just backup the whole folder on another HDD and then repair it then put my stuff back

Is it formatted in NTFS or FAT32? Cause, FAT32 can't store files over 4gb in size.

That's the error my WD drive had as well. I barely recovered the data and got a replacement from the manufacturer. Meanwhile, my other drives that are all Seagate haven't encountered any issues yet.
