It was more or less the type of game where you build your own stuff and laugh at your attempts. Like Goat Simulator?
It was almost impossible to make anything reasonable.
I'm going to try it again today so my opinion might change.

Best: Project Zomboid.
Sticking true to actual zombie survival as the devs claimed since day one with steady support and community interaction. No need to be wary about the lack of update from this one, they earned my moneys worth already which is an added bonus.
Worst: The Dead Linger.
The game has now been changed into a total of three different engines after numerous setbacks, stalls and limitations. I am now doubting Sandswept studio's actual competence of developing a working game.

Best zombie game I've ever played, a very solid game when I started playing, and getting updates all the time!

Castle Story might be the worst. Over 2 years and pretty much nothing changed/added.

I've only played GRAV and Space Engineers so far, but I like GRAV a lot. It's still kinda leggy, but fun to play. Space Engineers is fun too but I spent an hour just floating to the nearest asteroid and got killed by a warp or star thing. :/

How has noone mentioned don't starve, the very first huge succes that went tru early access?
All games mentioned here have been in the spotlights recently yet it seems people completely forgot about the initial batch of EA games.
As for games that failed to deliver imo; Towns, Nether, spacebase DF-9, Pixel piracy, Planetary Annihilation, Earth: Year 2066, DayZ (not a letdown perse, but after 1.5 years of early access with no end in sight I've lost all interest and hope for this game)

I don't really like Don't Starve personally, mainly because it gets boring quick after surviving past 20 nights, and has no real objective.

Same goes for me, but I wasn't really talking about my personal taste, just what was successful and what wasn't.
Don't starve imo is the prime example of how a dev should go trough EA, released at the right time with the right amount of content yet tons of content got created/added later giving it a lot of replay value for people who're really into sandbox games.
Don't starve is still a really popular title I'm honestly amazed at how popular don't starve together is in the store considering that it'll be free once it's done.

Valid point, thank you for the clarification. I agree with how it's a pretty model example of how devs should look at and execute EA releases, I wish they'd follow games like this more.

Imagine Me still hasn't moved itself to the level of being even a good flash game in over six months in early access, never mind becoming an actually good game.
The developer seems like a nice guy, but his game is terrible.
