Summer of 84 (2018)
Canadian-American coming of age horror mystery film. It's about a group of teenage friends who suspect that their police officer neighbor is a serial killer so they spend their summer spying on him and gathering evidence, but as they get closer to discovering the truth, things get dangerous. It's good, definitely feels like something that could've come out in 1984. But at the same time it wouldn't be one of the big 80s movies everyone still remembers and something more akin to the popularity Silver Bullet (1985) still receives 40 years later. Of course they're nothing alike apart from both being horror movies but just popularity-wise I'd put them on the same step. Of course this one is also probably a result of 80s kids/teen horror having a moment after Stranger Things premiered in 2016. Overall I think this is good but nothing exceptional. Can recommend.

High Anxiety (1977)
American satirical comedy mystery film. It's about a psychiatrist with intense fear of heights who goes to work for a mental institution run by doctors who appear to be crazier than their patients, and have secrets that they are willing to commit murder to keep. Rewatched this yesterday and it's still a lot of fun. While this is probably not among Mel Brooks' better movies it's still very good. Very good cast with lots of Mel Brooks movie regulars (Mel Brooks, Madeline Kahn, Cloris Leachman, Harvey Korman, Rudy De Luca and more). In the opening credits it's dedicated to Alfred Hitchcock and there are lots of fun references to several Alfred Hitchcock movies. Overall I enjoyed it a lot and can very much recommend it.

There's a Man in the Woods (2014)
American animated short drama film. It's about a teacher who struggles to control a rumour spreading around his elementary school by one greedy child. Seems like it's based on (or accompanying) a poem and the narration is very powerful, as is the animation style. At less than 4 minutes it's of course very short but it doesn't need to be any longer. I definitely enjoyed this one and can highly recommend it.

The 4:30 Movie (2024)
American semi-autobiographical coming-of-age comedy film. It's about a group of teenagers in the 1980s spend the day theater-hopping. It's very entertaining but under 90 minutes long which for me was definitely too short, because I was very invested in this movie. It's directed by Kevin Smith and based on his own experiences sneaking into movie theaters as a teenager and his earliest romantic endeavors. I don't really know any of the young actors who play the main bunch of characters but there were a lot of recognizable actors playing other characters, like Jason Lee, Justin Long, Ken Jeong, Method Man, Logic, Diedrich Bader, Kate Micucci, Rachel Dratch, Sam Richardson, Adam Pally, Harley Quinn Smith, Brian O'Halloran, Rosario Dawson, Jason Mewes, Jason Biggs and more. Overall it's very entertaining and (too) short, so if you're looking to watch something light-hearted I can very much recommend this.

Pride month movie! I like the director so I was looking forward to it. This movie was weirder than I expected it to be. I remember watching Naked Lunch (1991) as well and felt similarly, which makes sense since both movies are based on William S. Burroughs' works. I'm not very familiar with him but I can see the appeal definitely. I overall enjoyed it, so many good scenes and visuals that stuck with me for a while. Not your average gay movie, just so you know so don't expect something conventional lol.

About a Boy (2002)
British-French-German-American comedy-drama film. It's about a guy who attends single parent meetings to woo women and subsequently meets a troubled 12-year-old boy who becomes his friend pretty soon. Very good cast (Hugh Grant, Nicholas Hoult (in his first role (technically his second but he got an introducing credit for this one)), Toni Collette, Rachel Weisz, Natalia Tena and more). Overall I enjoyed this one a lot, it was very entertaining. I can very much recommend it.

A Man for All Seasons (1966)
British historical drama film. It's about the final years of Sir Thomas More, the 16th-century Lord Chancellor of England who refused both to sign a letter asking Pope Clement VII to annul Henry VIII of England's marriage to Catherine of Aragon and to take an Oath of Supremacy declaring Henry Supreme Head of the Church of England. Very good cast (Paul Scofield, Robert Shaw, Orson Welles, Leo McKern, Vanessa Redgrave, John Hurt, Nigel Davenport, Susannah York, Corin Redgrave, Colin Blakely and more). This was a very successful movie when it came out. It was a was a critical and box-office success, won six Oscars (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Paul Scofield, Best Adapted Screenplay (or whatever its equivalent was called back then), Best Cinematography – Color and Best Costume Design – Color) and countless other awards too. And I can definitely see why. It's a great story, is neither too long nor too short at a runtime of exactly 2 hours and is just very entertaining to look at with all those great performances. Highly recommended!

Squid Game in Conversation (2025)
South Korean documentary short film. It's about the Netflix show Squid Game. We get to see and listen to not only Lee Jung-jae and Lee Byung-hun who play who you could safely call the two most important character in the show but also Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator, writer and director of the show, about what the show meant to them, what the viewers might take away after watching it and much more. If you've watched and enjoyed Squid Game I can highly recommend this 30 minute documentary.

The Ritual (2025)
A boring exorcism film. So boring that I started to solve nonograms while watching. They could have expanded on a few plots to make it scarier, but I am guessing they kinda want to tell the story in a "documentary" style. Although the film said it is based on a true story, they definitely took some artistic spin on Father Joseph Steiger's notes. But it is not artistic enough to make the exorcism scary (maybe I missed the scary part when I was solving nonograms with the movie playing on the side).
K-Pop Demon Hunters (2025)
Never in a million year I would think demon hunting and K-pop blend together. So I am surprised how good this film is. Although the story is clichéd and predictable, the story flow, animation, art style (not on the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse level, but still quite good), and music choice are amazing. This is a film that I wish I had watched in a cinema.
The Phoenician Scheme (2025)
Quite enjoyed this one, but I want to watch The Grand Budapest Hotel and The French Dispatch, and rewatch Asteroid City before give it a "review".

So I Married an Axe Murderer (1993)
American romantic black comedy film. It's about a man afraid of commitment until he meets a woman who works at a butcher shop, and who may be a serial killer. Such a fun movie, very good cast (Mike Myers, Nancy Travis, Anthony LaPaglia, Phil Hartman, Brenda Fricker, Amanda Plummer, Charles Grodin, Michael Richards, Debi Mazar and more). Overall I very much enjoyed it and can definitely recommend it.

Riders of Justice/Retfærdighedens Ryttere (2020)
Danish action comedy film. It's about a deployed soldier who must return home to his teenage daughter after his wife dies in a tragic train accident but after a probability theory nerd shows up at their house the accident might not be as much of a coincidence as they originally thought. Very entertaining. Good performances by a (to me) mainly unknown cast (I know Mads Mikkelsen of course, and Nikolaj Lie Kaas and Nicolas Bro but just because all three of them were in the director's previous movie, the hilarious Men and Chicken/Mænd og Høns (2015). Overall I enjoyed this a lot (even though I'm not the biggest action movie guy) and although there wasn't that much comedy in this action comedy, I can very much recommend it.

Revolution (1985)
This movie is a rare British movie focused on the American Revolution (yes really).
The plot of the movie focuses on a fur trapper and his son who got caught up in the the war for independence within the Thirteen colonies. Their struggles begin after the pro-rebel mobs, having just liberated New York, took their boat, their main source of transportation, for war purposes, which led to them selling themselves to the American Continental Army, which almost gets them killed before they flee the battle. The entire movie follows the two lead characters, with the fur trapper not wanting to be involved in the war, but still flip flopping between both sides of the war while his son starts to join a pro-American youth gang after learning that his father decided to work for the British Imperial Army.
The presentation of the movie depicts the American Revolution as being rather gray with darker sides of the war depicted on film. The American rebels as unruly and poorly disciplined and very eager to commit wanton violence against those not fully in favour of independence, but having well-deserved anger against the British overlords. The British officers are portrayed as being level-headed, but very out of touch with the colonists, with one of the high-raking officers and his associates go as far as to use live human beings for their pseudo-fox hunt party.
The movie's does have its share of weaknesses, including the romantic sub-plot does meander toward the end of the film, but this one does provide a relatively fair minded depiction of an American war made by their former enemy. There are also some very interesting battle scenes in this film as well, like this one here

Contra (2020)
German comedy drama film. It's about a law professor who makes a racist remark when a muslim student arrives late for his lecture, so to avoid disciplinary measures he agrees to tutor her for a debating competition. It's a bit on the nose from time to time. I haven't really seen anything from Nilam Farooq yet but Christoph Maria Herbst is of course very famous in Germany. Overall this is good but nothing that the whole world needs to see. Can recommend.

Le brio (2017)
French comedy drama film. It's about a law professor who makes a racist remark when a muslim student arrives late for his lecture, so to avoid disciplinary measures he agrees to tutor her for a debating competition. I didn't know the German movie I watched yesterday was a remake but as it turns out it is, so I just watched the original, too. Well, it starts off with French icons like Claude Lévi-Strauss, Serge Gainsbourg, Romain Gary and Jacques Brel talking about societal flaws, the power of words and the like. So that's already better. And overall I do like this one better than the German remake I watched yesterday. So if you want to watch one version of the story, make it this one. Can recommend.

Racing with the Moon (1984)
American romantic comedy drama film. It's about two young men in 1942 who await induction into the U.S. Marines and say goodbye to their girlfriends. It's good, has a very good cast (Sean Penn, Elizabeth McGovern, Nicolas Cage, John Karlen, Crispin Glover, Pat Carroll, Michael Madsen, Dana Carvey, Carol Kane and more) and is all around a very well made coming-of-age story. Can recommend.
So this is the start of my Michael Madsen week, as he sadly passed away last week at only 67. This movie is only his third one but his first one is supposedly very bad and it wasn't even properly released, as it was made for prison inmates in a rehabilitation program, according to Madsen himself in a 2015 interview. And his second movie was WarGames (1983), which of course I have already seen. So yeah, this is his third movie and he had just a small role in it, but I still decided to start Michael Madsen Legacy Week with it. And I think I finally figured out what I will call these from now on.

Money for Nothing (1993)
American biographical comedy crime film. It's about a guy who who discovers $1.2 million that had fallen out of an armored van his struggles with keeping the money over a five-day period. Great cast (John Cusack, Benicio del Toro, Michael Madsen, James Gandolfini, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Debi Mazar, Fionnula Flanagan and more) in a very fun movie that's even based on a true story (and the real guy has a cameo, too). Overall I thought this was very entertaining so I can definitely recommend it.

Straight Talk (1992)
American romantic comedy film. It's about a woman who leaves her small-town life to move to Chicago, where she accidentally becomes a successful radio talk show host. Well, this is a very Dolly Parton movie, but considering she composed ten original songs for the film soundtrack and also plays the main character, that shouldn't be surprising. Other cast members include Griffin Dunne, Michael Madsen, Teri Hatcher, Ron Livingston, Charles Fleischer, Jane Lynch, Tracy Letts, Jeff Garlin and more. Overall I thought it was good but nothing outstanding. But if you're a fan of Dolly Parton you might enjoy it a lot. Can recommend.

Superman (2025)
American superhero film. It's about Superman's journey to reconcile his alien heritage with his adoptive human family. Watched this at the cinema yesterday. Well, this isn't even out yet in lots of places (so no spoilers here) so all I can say is that I was thoroughly entertained. The 130 minute runtime felt surprisingly short, the cast is very good (but half of them would lean into spoiler-territory, so I'm not gonna name any names). So yeah, I enjoyed it a lot. Feels very Superman. I also like seeing more obscure characters in movies like this and in this one we do see a few interesting ones. Overall I can definitely recommend this one. Obviously watch it on the biggest screen you can find.

Nice. I have my tickets already ordered for the first screening here on Friday. And I, as well, LOVE seeing the more obscure characters, which is something that James Gunn excels at doing. Watch Peacemaker and Creature Commandos for examples.

Being Michael Madsen (2007)
American mockumentary comedy film. It's about a paparazzi-hounded movie star who hatches a revenge scheme against a tabloid journalist. I don't know what to think of this one. It's not bad. It's also not good. Certainly nothing I'd ever rewatch. But I am glad that I watched it this one time. Still, can't recommend.

Iguana (1988)
Italian-Spanish-Swiss-American adventure crime film. It's about a bullied, disfigured man who flees from abusive locals, finds his own island and declares himself tyrant of his new domain and when a man and a woman get stranded there they become victims of his new sadistic nature. This is just not good. The makeup looks bad, Everett McGill has definitely been in better stuff and so has Michael Madsen. Overall I can't recommend it.

Superman 2025
Just got home from seeing it and all I can say is this - THIS is the Superman movie we have ALL been waiting for since the days of Christopher Reeve,
This was just so GOOD! What to expect from James Gunn, the same mastermind behind the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy... And we all know how amazing that was.
9/10 A MUST see.

Thelma & Louise (1991)
American crime drama film. It's about two friends who embark on a road trip that ends up in unforeseen circumstances. Well, wether you've already watched this movie or not, the final scene has long since entered the public's consciousness so you're likely familiar with it (as was I), but the movie leading up to that is still great. Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis (as our two main characters) are of course fantastic in this, but Harvey Keitel, Michael Madsen, Christopher McDonald, Brad Pitt and others are also very good. Overall I thought this was a great movie and I can highly recommend it.

Well it's sad Madsen had to go for you to find your way there but I'm glad you did.
I think that was the first movie I saw with him where he played a good guy in a crowd of a**holes (well Keitel is also a good guy in that one unexpectedly)
It's not a perfect movie but it's definitely one of the best character driven movies of the 90ies.
It's a shame Sarandon and Davis didn't get a fair shot at the Oscar that year. Any other year and it would have been a tight race between them. But it was the year of The Silence of the Lamb. All the nominated actresses gave winning performances that year.

American Night (2021)
Italian-American action crime drama thriller film. It's about a famous Andy Warhol painting that arrives in New York City, triggering a battle between an art dealer and a mafia boss. This isn't even really "style over substance", this is pretty much just style. A paper-thin story but very stylish editing and cinematography. It was also surprisingly boring and even the cast couldn't save it (Emile Hirsch, Michael Madsen, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Jeremy Piven, and (for some reason) singer Anastacia (who also provided the title song), among others). On top of that it was badly paced and felt so long that at multiple point I thought that it must be over soon but I still had over half the movie to go. Overall I definitely can't recommend this one.
Well, this wasn't Michael Madsen's final movie (as there are still multiple movies with him currently in production that are yet to be released) but then again, I also didn't watch his actual first one, so there's that. And I feel like this movie can kinda represent all of the bad movies he made in recent years. One thing about Michael Madsen is that in great movies he was great and in bad movies he was often still good. Not always, but he surely managed to stand out often despite everything else about the movie being bad. And sadly he was in a lot more bad movies than great ones. But he shouldn't be remembered for those. Remember him for Reservoir Dogs (1992), Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003), Kill Bill: Volume 2 (2004) and the like.
RIP Michael Madsen

Robot Jox (1990)
American post-apocalyptic mecha science-fiction film. It's about a distant future where mankind has forsaken global wars for battles of single combat, so conflicts between the two opposing super powers that exist are done through gladiator-style matches between giant robots piloted by trained champions. That's honestly a very cool concept (and as a kid I would've loved this) but the story falls a bit short. The story beats are not very original but overall I think the movie is fun enough to watch once. Would maybe make a good double feature with something like Pacific Rim (2013). Can recommend.

Here we go, I'll start.
Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark (2010) - This movie is a joke. At first it's interesting, then it's boring and then it's just funny/pathetic. And they put it in a "horror" genre. Words are not sufficient. Nosferatu is turning in his grave. 3/10
