Here we go, I'll start.

Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark (2010) - This movie is a joke. At first it's interesting, then it's boring and then it's just funny/pathetic. And they put it in a "horror" genre. Words are not sufficient. Nosferatu is turning in his grave. 3/10

Kraven The Hunter (2024)

American superhero film. It's about Kraven's relationship with his father and his path to becoming the greatest hunter. Well, this is 2 hours of basically nothing just to set up a character we might or might not see in anything Spider-Man related down the line. Sure, the characters themselves could be interesting. Not only Kraven, but also Calypso, Chameleon and Rhino. Rhino in this movie is definitely more interesting than Paul Giamatti's battle suit Rhino in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), but that's not saying all that much. The movie was just boring with a pretty cookie-cutter story that's all over the place. Aaron Taylor-Johnson is pretty much the only good thing about this movie. Overall I can't recommend it.

I Heart Huckabees (2004)

American-British philosophical comedy-drama film. It's about a pair of detectives hired to investigate the meaning of the life of their clients, but as the different investigations cross paths, their rival and nemesis tries to drag their clients into her own views on the meaning of their lives. The plot is a bit messy but the cast is great (Dustin Hoffman, Jason Schwartzman, Mark Wahlberg, Lily Tomlin, Jude Law, Isabelle Huppert, Naomi Watts, Jonah Hill, Isla Fisher, Kevin Dunn, Shania Twain, Bob Gunton, Tippi Hedren, Saïd Taghmaoui, Jake Hoffman, Richard Jenkins and more) so for that alone I can already recommend it. Overall I thought it was good but I don't think it's anything I'd ever rewatch.

Cast a Deadly Spell (1991)

American horror-fantasy detective comedy film. It's about a detective in 1948 Los Angeles, in a world where magic is common, who is hired to locate the Necronomicon that has been stolen and several other people searching for the book who intend to use it to summon one of the Old Ones. This is surprisingly good for a TV movie. The cast also has some recognizable faces (Fred Ward, Julianne Moore, David Warner, Clancy Brown and more) who deliver good performances. Very good special effects, nice gore, overall a very entertaining movie and it's only like 90 minutes long. Definitely one I can recommend!

Witch Hunt (1994)

American fantasy crime mystery film. It's about a detective in 1950s Los Angeles, in a world where magic is common, who is hired to investigates a murder case without it. As you already might've guessed, this is the sequel to the movie I watched yesterday. A different, yet still interesting cast (Dennis Hopper, Julian Sands, Eric Bogosian, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Debi Mazar, Clifton Collins jr. and more), some nice effects, but a less interesting story. The setting is still fascinating, though. Definitely would watch a few more movies set in that world where magic is just a thing. And while this one wasn't as good as the first one I can still recommend it.

And it is also free on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmrvrZPFkEw

A Little Chaos (2014)

British period drama film. It's about a landscape gardener hired to design and construct the outdoor ballroom for King Louis XIV's new palace but famed builder André Le Nôtre is soon captivated by her beauty. Very good cast (Alan Rickman (who also directed and co-wrote this) as King Louis XIV, Kate Winslet as the gardener, Matthias Schoenaerts as André Le Nôtre, with others like Stanley Tucci, Jennifer Ehle, Helen McCrory and more). It's an interesting story and definitely worth at least one watch (even if only for the cast). Can recommend.

Leaves of Grass (2009)

American black comedy film. It's about an Ivy League professor who is lured back to his hometown, where his twin brother, a small-time pot grower, has concocted a scheme to take down a local drug lord. Very good cast (Edward Norton (in a double role), Tim Blake Nelson (who also wrote and directed this), Susan Sarandon, Keri Russell, Melanie Lynskey, Richard Dreyfuss, Ty Burrell, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Maggie Siff, Josh Pais and more) and of course Ed Norton shines in both of his roles. Before watching I expected more of a weed comedy vibe but that was definitely not what I got. It's surprisingly deep at times. Overall I enjoyed it and can recommend it.

Night Swim (2024). Horror movie that could induce some claustrophobia/hydrophobia but overall it wasnt that special. Everything you see in it has been made before countless times, and the acting was ok, but nothing particular. Overall an ok movie but brings nothing new to the genre. I rated 6/10. Recommended only for fanatics of this genre, otherwise watch the classics.

Knights of Badassdom (2013)

American fantasy comedy horror film. It's about some LARPers and their aspiring rockstar friend who they're draggin along, who accidentally conjure up a demon from hell and now have to deal with the consequences. Very good cast (Peter Dinklage, Steve Zahn, Danny Pudi, Jimmi Simpson, W. Earl Brown, Brian Posehn and more). This is just fun all around. Good music, good horror (even if it could be more), funny larping stuff. It's under 90 minutes long (and it should honestly have been like 15, 20 minutes longer) but it's still very entertaining so I can very much recommend it.

Escape from the 21st Century (2024)

Chinese comedy science fiction film. It's about three friends who discover they have the power to travel back and forth 20 years with a sneeze but the future is not as good as they hoped, and they need to take on the responsibility of saving the world. There are movies that look flashy but have not much to offer story-wise, but are still fun to watch because of all of those visuals. This is definitely one of them. Very much style-over-substance but at least it's nice to look at. Of course the plot is ridiculous but they're very much leaning into that. So I can recommend it, but I wouldn't watch it more than once.

The Long Ships (1964)

British-Yugoslavian adventure drama film. It's about a Viking adventurer and a Moorish king who compete to find a legendary golden bell near the Pillars of Hercules. Very entertaining, very good cast (Sidney Poitier, Richard Widmark, Russ Tamblyn, Oskar Homolka and more) and all around just fun to watch if you like those 60s adventure movies. Can recommend.

Hell's Hinges (1916)

American drama Western film. It's about a wayward western town where a local tough guy is reformed by the faith of a good woman. William S. Hart (who co-directed this and also played the main character) definitely stood out and is great in this. I'm not the biggest fan of Westerns but this one is very good. Can recommend.

The Frozen North (1922)

American comedy Western short film. It's about a bumbling, inept criminal who stumbles through various misadventures in the snowy Yukon. For Buster Keaton this is surprisingly dark at some points. For example the gag where he kills a couple and then realizes that "this isn't my wife OR my house" and just leaves. Or when he is momentarily shown dressed as Erich von Stroheim's character from the film Foolish Wives (1922), to indicate his villainous intent to force himself on her. This is very much a parody of William S. Hart Westerns (like the one I watched yesterday) and apparently he wasn't amused. Back when this movie came out people were of course much more familiar with the stuff Keaton was parodying in this and that definitely plays a part in wether you're enjoying a movie like this or not. 103 years later I obviously a lot of those intricacies are kinda lost to a modern audience (hell, I just watched my first William S. Hart Western yesterday). So overall this was quite an unusual movie for Buster Keaton and I wouldn't rate it very high compared to all the other movies of his I've already seen but I can still recommend it. Maybe make it a double feature with Hell's Hinges (1916) so you have at least a slight understanding of the matter.

The Surfer (2024)

Australian-Irish psychological thriller film. It's about a man who plans to surf at an idyllic beach with his son, yet he becomes thwarted and tormented by the locals. I love this kind of movie where someone's more or less descending into madness, really fucks with your mind. Definitely not a popcorn flick as the title might make some people believe. With a movie like this I can't say I "enjoyed" it but I thought this was really good. Nic Cage did a great job as our main character, Julian McMahon (in his last role) played a very good main antagonist as well. Overall I can highly recommend this one.

Blood and Concrete (1991)

American neo-noir crime comedy film. It's about a dimwitted car thief and a suicidal woman who get entangled in a chaotic Los Angeles underworld plot involving a hallucinogenic drug which increases people's sexual drive and is highly addictive. Good cast (Billy Zane, Jennifer Beals, Darren McGavin, Harry Shearer, Mark Pellegrino, Ellen Albertini Dow and more). This is a surprisingly decent movie for being so obscure. It may start off a little slow but once it gets going it's really good and very entertaining. I can very much recommend it.

Mood Indigo (2013)
Its a very surrealistic love story from Michel Gondry, who was the director of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Hard to watchm cause the style of the movie is more like Alice in wonderland... meaning ANYTHING can happen, and EVERYTHING will happen as well...🤯 But it was a nice out of my comfort zone experience even though it took me 4 days to watch, and I watched like 4 Adam Sandler movies (Little Nicky, Happy Gilmore 1-2, 50first date) in the meantime... 😅

The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025)

American superhero film. It's about the Fantastic Four having to defend Earth against planet-devouring Galactus and the Silver Surfer. Watched this yesterday at the cinema. First of all, the 60s retrofuturistic setting is fantastic (pun intended). I liked it way more than yet another superhero movie set in the present. The cast was also very good and played their roles very well (even though I still think Pedro Pascal's Mr. Fantastic would've looked better clean shaven). I don't want to spoil anything so I won't talk much about the plot here, but you should already know that watching a character like Galactus comes across better on the big screen than on your phone or PC monitor at home. So yeah, I can definitely recommend it.

As the Gods Will/神さまの言うとおり (2014)

Japanese supernatural horror film. It's about a group of high school students who are forced to play a game of death without knowing who, why or how. If that sounds like a specific very popular korean series to you you're not the only one who'd think that because when that series came out people immediately compared it to this movie and the manga it's based on, sparking some controversy over the similarities. So, about this movie. It's very well made, definitely has that "weird japanese horror" thing going on but I don't mind that at all, the CGI is obvious but still works. It's not my favourite Takashi Miike movie, but overall I think I can recommend it.

Really? I never saw any of that. Shame I missed all the controversy, would've been interesting to read what the complaints were about since execution between these two is wildly different (specially if using the manga as comparison point). But I guess people will really just see a similar theme/shared motif/what-have-you and decide to start throwing around complaints of copying, I remember it happened with The Hunger Games being compared to Battle Royale as well.

Der Buchspazierer (2024)

German comedy drama family film. It's about an old guy who works in a little bookshop in a small town where he wraps up books and delivers them by foot and a young girl who one day starts joining him on his delivery trips. Everyone here in Germany of course knows Christoph Maria Herbst but child actress Yuna Bennett (who was only 11/12 years old when this movie was filmed) plays opposite him very well and she can definitely hold her own against him. I'm very excited to see where her career will take her. Now about the movie. I thought it was really good. It doesn't reinvent the wheel and it doesn't need to and if you like movies that just feel gentle and heartwarming this one's definitely for you. It looks great, the story is beautiful, it's very much one of those movies for the soul. And of course it helps that I could see my younger self in that curious little kid who loves books. Overall I can highly recommend it.

Happy Gilmore (1996)

American sports comedy film. It's about a failed ice hockey player who seeks to raise enough money to prevent the foreclosure of his grandmother's house and when he unexpectedly learns that he can make long shots in golf he starts competing in paid tournaments, much to the chagrin of some of the more serious golfers. I can't believe I hadn't watched this one yet. It's very entertaining and Adam Sandler is really good in this one. Great cast too (Adam Sandler, Christopher McDonald, Frances Bay, Carl Weathers, Julie Bowen, Richard Kiel, Bob Barker, Joe Flaherty and more). Overall I can highly recommend this, even to people who might usually not be the biggest Adam Sandler fans.

The Naked Gun (2025)

American action comedy film. It's about Lt. Frank Drebin Jr. who must succeed in his father’s footsteps to prevent the closure of Police Squad. Just came home from the cinema and I immediately have to tell everyone about this one. It's genuinely hilarious, Liam Neeson plays the role better than anyone would've thought and there are so many jokes and gags (even throughout the end credits, so don't miss out on those) that you'll barely have time to stop laughing. It's way better than I could've imagined so all I can say is: Go watch this as soon as you can, it's fantastic. Probably the funniest movie of the decade. Highly recommended!

Wow, TIL, thanks! I wonder if they cast Liam Neeson because his name is so similar to Leslie Nielsen, lol. Probably not, but I'd like to think so.
