So it turns out we're finally getting a PC version of Grandia!

No word yet on if the port is based on the PS1 or Saturn version of the game, but hopefully it's the Saturn one since that version is the original (if they ported from PS1 then it would be a port of a port, and that almost never ends well) plus the Saturn version is generally considered the overall superior version.

Anyone else excited?

Here's the start of the game for those not familiar with it.
And here's something for checking out the thread.

UPDATE: The port has finally been show off. Sadly, it looks like it's based off the inferior PS1 version. This means it has all the same issues as the PS1 version such as misaligned textures, lack of shadows, and low resolution 2D backgrounds instead of the 3D ones on Saturn. All the textures also seem to be run through an automatic upscaler instead of being the originals or being redrawn properly, as a result everything looks muddy. Audio has missing effects, and 3D elements have seam issues (likely as a result of the texture filter). You can see footage here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLSa-WNhGPQ

HD remasters of old games like this should really add every feature from every platform it was released. Back then it was really common for games to have major differences on different consoles. We'll see if they do this one right.

Agreed. If you're going to port a game this old it better result in the best version of that game overall being made.
In Grandias case both versions had some rather noticeable differences:

Saturn:
+Properly aligned ground textures (on PS1 ground paths went right through houses/trees/etc., made no sense)
+Fully 3D battle areas (on PS1 the battle areas were just low resolution screen grabs of the Saturns areas that you moved on top of)
+Buildings cast shadows
+Water has unique 'wave' effect (PS1 water was completely flat)
+Slightly better audio quality (this probably had more to to with Saturns awesome DAC hardware then anything else though)
+Has optional 'expansion pack' of sorts called Digital Museum which was sold as a separate disc
+Has perspective corrected textures, and no jittery polygons (PS1 sadly had texture warping and polygon jitter)

PS1:
+Higher quality FMV (less compression)
+Better spell effects/transparency (Fire especially looks far better due to it 'glowing' on PS1 where as it looks very flat on Saturn)
+Better character shadows (on Saturn they're circles, on PS1 they follow the character sprite outline)
+Dual analog support
+Released in English

Both used completely different transition effects when entering a battle, I like it more on PS1 but that's a matter of opinion.

iirc the Saturn versions framerate was much more consistent (though still not perfect) then on PS1.

Played this on PS1 on its original release there. Bought on a whim and loved the game. This is excellent news to me no matter which version they choose.

I must confess to never finishing the original Grandia, but that doesn't mean I don't love the heck out of it. Thank you so very much for this awesome info and the extra giveaway! :D

I found out about the Grandia Series after playing through Grandia 2 on the Dreamcast. Eventually managed to try the original on a Playstation emulator but iirc there was a but at the time in the emu that wouldn't let me go past a certain point. Never got back to the game after that.

Grandia is one of the PS1 games I have the most fond memories of, great to know it's coming to Steam! Here's hoping they do a good job on the remaster, I'm still bitter about what they did with Secret of Mana.

haven't been keeping up with it since my initial disappointment.

just checked and they just released their final major fix earlier this month, which is still unacceptable in my opinion.

the game has been out since February , and they just finished fixing it.

I beat the game once, I have no interest in playing it again. I don't think this game was even memorable for me unlike, say, Parasite Eve series.

It was a masterpiece, but the good memories are probably nostalgia effect, it seems to have aged a lot too !
And this end of year is so full of incoming releases, including new shiny disgaea 5 (and soul calibur 6), wallet already died ! XD

The best game for adventures, but it does not have the combat that Grandia III excels at.

Okay, I am obviously mixing this up then, because I thought Grandia was a top-down shoot-'em-up franchise. But what am I confusing it with? 🤔

Gradius is the shmup with the closest name I can think of, though it's side-to-side instead of top down.

you're probably mixing it up with a top down shoot-em-up.

That reminds me of finishing Grandia 2 on Steam. I have it for the PS2 too but got stuck there at a boss as I was young and didn't really know much english.

Next, the Suikoden games if Konami can even be bothered :(
I know Lunar: The Silver Star Story has been released for PC years ago but it would be great if they can re-release it again with higher resolution support, cleaned-up sprites etc.
