Hey SG, I mentioned in a discussion yesterday that I was working on this feature, and I just wanted to write an announcement since it's complete. In short, when you win a game, the site will now check your other giveaway entries that are open, and remove those for the game you just won. It also works for giveaways ending at the same time. This helps to prevent you from accidentally winning a game more than once while you're sleeping, or away from the site.

FAQ

  1. Does this happen when I win, or when I mark a gift as received?
It happens the moment you win. When users win a game more than once, it typically occurs before they even have time to visit the site. If we waited until a gift was marked as received, it would be too late in the majority of cases.

  2. Do I get points refunded?
Yes, if any of your giveaway entries are automatically removed, we will refund the correct number of points, assuming you have less than the current maximum of 300.

  3. Does this prevent all possibilities of winning a game more than once?
No, a user could still end up the winner of a giveaway, and then a different giveaway they entered in the past could be rerolled, causing them to have two wins for the same game. Or, a user could win a giveaway, believe they are not going to receive the gift from the giveaway creator, and start entering more giveaways for the same game, only to win again. We'll look at options to reduce these possibilities, but for now, this update covers most instances of multiple wins that we are seeing. Remember, if you ever win a game more than once, you should only redeem one copy, mark additional copies as not received, and ask those giveaway creators to request a new winner.

The main benefit of this update is the time and headaches it saves for everyone on the site. Last month we had 2,012 tickets requesting new winners because the current winners already won or purchased the game. That's nearly half of our Request New Winner tickets, or 25% of our total tickets. Overall, this is going to result in less explanations from giveaway winners, less tickets required from giveaway creators, and more sleep for the support team. It's a win-win-win.

Edit

This is now setup for rerolls as well. If a giveaway is rerolled and you're selected as the new winner, the site will remove your other giveaway entries that are currently open for the same game.

Nice feature.
Would be great to have an auto-sync once you mark a giveaway as received.

Hi,

I won RIVE today but I checked my entered GAs and I still had a GA active for RIVE. So not sure what went wrong. :/

So, what happens if you win something and then get kicked out from another ga that happens nearly at the same time, but there where only 5 people in it. Does that GA creater then won't receive cv?

correct. if that's a large enough issue for them they should of added more groups or whitelisters or whatever.

already happened all the time prior, this isn't gonna make things hardly any diff.

Nice! I know several people have suggested this (including myself) in various discussion threads over the time I've been here. Thanks for implementing it!

Nice, it does work.. I just won a copy of Zombie Zoeds and had an entry for another ending in a few days. After resynching, as I always do after a win, I go to remove and it's gone. Excellent job.

Thank you cg for these much needed improvements.
I got blacklisted by a giver for being the re-rolled winner of a giveaway i had won after theirs ended. Apparently they were fed up with rerolls and took it out on me.
Hopefully this will avoid that circumstance for myself and others.

Can you flag GAs that are removed and if the winner selects "Not Received", they have a new button to re-enter (flagged). The main problem could be that they do not have enough points to re-enter. I assume the points for the removed GAs are refunded (can you then have more than 300 points then?)

First of all this was a long-expected feature from community, thank you ^_^
Secondly, is it possible to make this new feature opt-out optional?

That's some good news Cg, thank you! ^^

1/4 of all tickets is a significant number.

When running SGTools trains for 3 weeks the most tickets I had was for already owning the game or DLC.

Could this be modified in a way that when an user leaves a group (and resyncs their profile), they will automatically leave all giveaways from said group?

I'm not sure if this has been brought before but...

When someone wins your GA and you need to do a reroll because he already won the game... Would it be possible to apply the reroll only to the entries that doesn't already own the game at the moment of the reroll? (not sure if I'm making myself clear).

I had a GA for Post Master (around one month ago) and I've already asked like 6 (!!!) rerolls because every time a new winner is picked, he already got the game by now.

Removing giveaway entries that are open when a user syncs his Steam library (either manually or automatically) would be a nice feature, too.

+1

i have a ticket open that only admin can fix (remove entries) cause there are no other people to re-roll the last copy too that don't already own it. a check in place could of allowed for it to of not been to late for a re-re-roll and had that last winner instead.

Wow amazing job cg and staff team!

A suggestion if i'm allowed (not sure if was already suggested though)

Could you add a third option check in the GA won/created so those people who win can check the GA as Claimed, then creator click the Sent and person who win click as Received.

That way those KEYS are not compromise for the GA because a winner who already saw the key could already activate it and marked as not received (claiming he/she already won the game, meantime give the key to a second friend who activate it therefore keys are duplicated and GA creator needs to deliver a new copy, resulting in an unfair situation for the creator).
Doing this creator won't click the Sent until the winner check as Claimed. This of course won't stop greedy people from trying to cheat the system, but at least will make a little harder to get away with it and it will give one more tool for creator of GA so they get less cheated in some cases.

Again, thanks for the amazing new feature and waiting for more to come! ;)

Are we sure this thing is actually working? Because I have sent nearly a dozen reroll requests for very recent multi-wins this week alone.

Hah. In light of my recent experiments that revealed possible bots up to level 10? Not really. But since the aim was to reduce support load of tickets sent due to multi-wins, it may not have reached its desired effect. (Considering I think I haven't sent this many multi-win tickets during entire last year, it may have even backfired totally.)

That was two years ago, where it was the annoying distorted text. Google's recent iterations are more user friendly. Although I believe that when you click "I'm not a robot" they check your cookies or mouse behavior or something. I'm not sure how effective that would be to weed out bots.

I think it is not bad idea but I think we can even limit this to only till you reach 2nd or 3th level, or even go step further and support rerolls should be automatically for people who makes giveaways and don't have fake rerolls and they not abused 'support' in any way, only check one of x (10, 20, 100).

I like the idea of making level 3 users and below to use captchas, if they are indeed the majority of botters.

support rerolls should be automatically for people who makes giveaways and don't have fake rerolls and they not abused 'support' in any way, only check one of x (10, 20, 100).

It would cause too much drama if there isn't the tight oversight that is implemented currently.

So are you suggesting solutions requiring external tools that are more time consuming and cumbersome to handle for both creators and participants are an equally good alternative?

equally good to weed out bots as a captcha? yeah and I much prefer it when entering and creating.
as for being more time consuming it fails to a certain extent... at least making puzzles is fun so it doesn't feel like a big deal. at this point its just my hatred of capcha's holding me back I guess.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I suspect they are better even but for people that neither enjoy solving puzzles nor creating them it would probably be good with an easy alternative :)

Edit: I'm not saying there's anything wrong with enjoying or creating puzzles it's just that I'd rather spend that time playing games :)

More user-friendly? Sure, if you're running Chrome or a Chromium-derived browser. Otherwise, you're being heavily discriminated against by the captcha. These days I need at least 4 screens before it lets me pass, had an absolute record of 10 last week!

That thread was both interesting and a bit scary to read. Some people really do seem to live their lives with the tinfoil hat securely in place. Anyway, as fubarnocaps said, the captchas are a lot less intrusive these days.

it seems to remove all my wins entries, but yeah i noticed it has had very little effect on lvl0-3 users. they just continue to join stuff after a win without paying attention to the fact that they won it already, and clearly aren't syncing.

It does work but with delay?

I won TLJ last week I checked entered GA page, and my entries were still there. I though I have to mark it firstly as received but they were gone after refresh. Still with such small timeframe it'd be highly unlikely for someone to win game again. So they must re-enter those GAs.

Probably auto-joiners.

Not too long ago I also saw a bunch of them joining a DLC I know must have only attracted auto-joiners (since illussive title that was bundled with DLC, so pretty much everyone having the game also would have had the DLC). And indeed, the same names kept appearing. Heck, even after people went "I already own this, please re-roll" I saw their names appear in giveaways of the same DLC entered after their re-roll request.

Many I've blacklisted, but it's just swimming upwards. And can't report them to support though I did try to look with sgtools for infractions and reported those if I found them. Least I could do :)

sigh Tell me about it. My half that wants to equally give everyone a chance with level 0 public is now in a constant struggle with the one that gained numerical evidence that level 0–2 is so infested by now with auto-joining bots that I don't even dare to think about the percentage. I just don't know how to provide keys to the actual humans among them who would actually use them.

Permalink

If you keep on making level 0 giveaways, there's a non-zero chance that I could enter one...some day...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

of course it's autojoin bots. xD
they are so stupid they can't even config it properly and each time sg removes their entries, the bot autojoins again... *facepalm*

it would be a great way to detect who uses bots and ban them forever, according to the ToS. <3

Some users are stupid enough to enter mindlessly though. You can't distinguish a dumb bot from a dumb human in terms of entries...maybe if you look at requests/second or other behavior then the banhammer could come out.

well, there are even more methods to detect bots at 100% rate combined with this, but i won't discuss them here =3

next: automatically sync after marking received.

it still wouldn't stop everyone from multi-wins (win twice before marking), however it should help cut down on some of the re-entry crap.

yes, there is a script that does this, but it needs to be a site feature imo.

Indeed for every suggestion I've seen that would be a nice feature there's always a bunch of people saying there's this and that tool for it, like that would help when they are optional.

I'm not liking this new system.
From what I can tell it doesn't give you the points back from the giveaways you've entered, it only deletes your entries.

Permalink

i still think points should be wiped to zero upon wins. yes, it sucks for participants trying to win again, but they did just win something after all. xD

the points generate too fast anyways really. all the group created GAs still generate points for people who are not within the group as well, so it generates more then necessary amount of points for public GAs in those regards.

If I enter 10 giveaways for the same thing (I really want to win a copy), and it costs 15 points each (No Time to Explain Remastered)
That's 135 points that just vanish into the aether if I win just one of those copies while the others are still running.

And points really only generate when there's a new bundle out (because people just love to give away trash).

that's 135points well spent on something you won though.. ^^

Using the old system (which I highly preferred) I could win, and remove my entries myself getting the points back.

i know, but that's what i mean.. i wish it dropped it to zero points to purposely slow winners down a tiny bit. in theory it would allow for an ever so slightly increase in odds for someone that hasn't won something that day.

I'm glad it doesn't because my wins are few and far between. Today just happened to be a lucky day with 3 wins.
Yesterday I was entered in 20 or so Whitelisted GAs with very few entries.
The website claimed I had a 100% chance of winning, ended up being 0.

Now I can understand dropping people to 0 points if they enter every single thing they can (just for a +1), but I can't do that.
I'd rather enter giveaways I would enjoy playing.
