Anyway it's starting to spread larger and larger in countries and throughout the whole world, are you scared, are you prepared or you act like it's just like the flu?

Trump also said when it gets warmer it will go away..

But in Africa last time i checked it didn't seem to spread there, same for Russia for some reason.

Russia and Africa also get less international traffic. It's spreading in Brazil, Egypt, and Australia well enough at the moment.

Science doesn't have a solid proof on why influenza is seasonal. There's some theories, like humidity & more people in close contact, that have some evidence, but it's not conclusive. I wouldn't count on Summer bringing this to a halt, maybe just slowing it some.

Covid-19 is starting to spread rapidly in tropical regions where the climate is generally hot and humid right now, so I'd say that the virus won't just fade out when it gets warmer.

I listened to a Rogan podcast last night that provided a lot of clarity and cleared up all the disinformation. This is the guy he interviewed:

Michael Osterholm is an internationally recognized expert in infectious disease epidemiology. He is Regents Professor, McKnight Presidential Endowed Chair in Public Health, the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP), Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Division of Environmental Health Sciences, School of Public Health, a professor in the Technological Leadership Institute, College of Science and Engineering, and an adjunct professor in the Medical School, all at the University of Minnesota.

It rambles a bit (It's Rogan after all) but it really is worth playing as you will learn much that you did not know. The saddest thing that I learned was that if they hadn't dropped the ball and stopped researching a coronavirus vaccine after the SARS outbreak in 2009, we probably wouldn't be having this conversation right now.

Here's a well written and approachable article that's kept up to date: https://arstechnica.com/science/2020/03/dont-panic-the-comprehensive-ars-technica-guide-to-the-coronavirus/

It does a great job of explaining the facts, why we should care, and why we shouldn't panic.

In Hungary, the government just ruled in favor of a closing all universities (distance learning) and any events or gatherings with over 100 people will be canceled. Border control is reinstated on western borders. A lot of offices sent their workers to home office for the rest of the month. Most clubs and bigger social places are closing shop for now. Airline travel is limited and public transport vehicles will be disinfected more frequently.

It's mainly important to keep informed with facts and numbers.
Help flatten the curve / social distancing.

Denmark completely shut down so I wonder if the same thing will happen here in Sweden. I work at the library so that means that I won't be able to work for sure. That's going to suck as I instantly get depressed if I'm home with nothing to do.

Well, you would at least be able to get that free vacation and be able to play more games if that happened, I'll have to continue working (karolinska sjukhuset) no matter if Sweden gets shut down or not :l

Damn, Karolinska. I'm assuming there's complete chaos there right now. Didn't you just lay off tons of people recently as well?

Pretty much, no visitors are allowed since yesterday and the only thing the staff talks about is "corona this, corona that".
But thanks to that there's barely any patients that don't HAVE to go to the hospital visiting either as they're scared that they might catch the disease or, as I heard a patient say last night, because they don't want to take a bed from a corona patient that might need it more (which I don't recommend, as the "normal" patients won't get any of the isolation rooms anyway).
So for example the night between wednesday and thursday apparently only had 1 patient in the ER according to a colleague, which means that the lay offs don't make much of a difference right now. But this will of course change if the situation gets worse.

Yeah, I heard. I actually hope that the schools gets shut down here as well as that'd lead to less spread of the virus and I'll have more room to sit on the bus!
I only hope that the bus lines doesn't shut down, which I heard a rumor about, or I'll have to start walking to work..

I wonder what the mortality rate for people who are non-elderly (say under 50) AND have no other health problems/weak immune system. Closest stat I found was just for age but doesn't account for health.

Well, people in my proximity are one of the first ones to be confirmed as having COVID-19 in my country. My boyfriend is sick and he is getting tested today. Fortunately, all of the cases seem to be mild for the moment, but we are still on edge because it takes weeks to get completely well and you never know which direction things are going in.

here in Italy our "government" is issuing decrees every hour that contradict each other but anyways we have shut down almost everything in the last days, let's hope the rest of Europe protects itself at its best too since it's something really serious, here luckily we have many good local administrators that are able to make good laws and interpretations but yeah.. it's the reign of chaos, as always in Italy..

What contradictions? Each signed decision in these days was intended to reduce the likelihood of coronavirus transmission and was extended at a greater area and finally all over Italy.

Covid 19 is now considered a pandemic.
Schools and pretty much any event or location with large crowds are being closed.
The portuguese have heard and they are taking precautions. No School? No work?
that's fine, you can easily enjoy your day off by, buying toilet paper, participating on covid 19 themed events and of course taking a relaxing day at the nearest overcrowded beach.

Russia have fake statistic more than 100 years. Lies and fake in all thing. They simply record all diseases / viruses as viral respiratory infections and heart failure - this is the whole solution to problems in Russia.
It also looks like the practice of covering dilapidated houses with banners with painted repaired walls / windows, with painted citizens on balconies and painted cats (!!!) in the windows.
Do not believe in fairy tales about Russia. Here can be mounted a powerful door with a powerful lock, and there will NOT be a fence on the sides, just one door. Here may be mounted a door with a powerful reinforced window at first look, but in fact it is not glass, but a thin oilcloth, an imitation that can be pierced with a finger, for which the company however received money as a bulletproof glass for banking equipment.

Same thing with medicine and everything else.

All major US sports leagues are now suspended.

NBA paused their ongoing season after some players have tested positive.
NHL shares many arenas with NBA teams and has also paused their ongoing season
Major League Soccer has suspended matches for at least 30 days
Major League Baseball is postponing the pre-season and the start of their 2020 season (scheduled for March 26) by at least 2 weeks
PGA & NASCAR will play on, but with no spectators in attendance.
(NFL is not currently in-season, they normally do not begin play until September)

I have a question... I have heard of high expected infection rates, but it seems like China is leveling off at around 80k cases, which is like 0.01% of their population.

Is it the case that China has actually stopped the spread, even though they have 80k diagnosed cases? It seems like it would be nearly impossible to contain something that had spread that much already, even for a totalitarian government. Would it be possible for someone who is a carrier to spur another breakout in China and for their numbers to shoot up again? Or, is there some other factor here, such as natural resistance / some neutralizing factor?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

the problem is that you can't really trust the numbers from china, they are given by the chinese government which is know to lie to keep face.
at the beginning of the whole thing you had on one side the kind of low numbers by them and on the other side chinese social media which showed a total different picture of how the outbreak went
