No offence meant, but if you're comparing NZ wages with North America or Western Europe, this statement is utter gonads and demonstrably incorrect...

I was actually thinking Aussie, but from the quick stop by your gov website, says 10.80 for people 16-17 and under 200 training hours. Try $6 USD here.

edit for url http://www.dol.govt.nz/er/pay/minimumwage/

Our money also doesn't go as far. I'm paying roughly US$200 a month for internet and television, just to get a 150GB cap and some decent channels. Then you have other expenses.

How much we get is only half of it.

Eh. Expenses sound similar. I pay $70/mo for 3rd rate net, and wouldn't dare pay TV prices. I'm in Canada so it's slightly different. I just always see people call NA the rich continent. It's just different economies.

You're talking about minimum wage, not average wage. Also, in the US, people have vastly more disposable income. I'll add a link here shortly, but trust me on this :D

EDIT: Ok, here's a list of countries indexed by PPP (purchasing power parity) based on data that's a year or two old.

While the US weighs in at $48,890 per annum, the Aussies trail at $36,910 and NZ comes in behind them with $29,140. EDIT: Canada has a PPP figure of $39,830.

I've never made more than minimum wage. My full time job just cut me to 10 hours a week.

I can't pay rent.

edit: I live in Canada, 50% of the population of BC live below the poverty line. Yes in NA there are very rich people. Most of them don't even work. They raise the average wage exponentially. The same thing would happen if you included oil tycoons in 3rd world countries. I'm not saying people in your country are well off, or that people here are particularly poor. I just feel that this idea that everyone living in NA has their basic needs met and easily spoils themselves is just silly. Any spoiling I've done, I've gone into debt for. And I haven't seen a dentist in years, I have so many cavities. I'll never be able to afford it.

That sucks. Sorry to hear it. Hope 2013 brings some positive surprises for you :)

I've done enough travelling to know that the myth of the streets of NA being paved with gold is simply that - a myth. All I am saying is that NZ/AUS/US price differences cannot be justified on a basis of disposable income or individual wealth of the residents of these countries.

There is also a simplistic line of reasoning that is sometimes trotted out in these discussions which assumes some sort of parity between currencies (ie 1 US dollar = 1 AU dollar = 1 NZ dollar). The truth is that if disregarding exchange rates in favour of numbers or a currency unit were truly a viable way of measuring wealth, ordinary Zimbabweans would be among the richest people in the world, since these people routinely carry around trillion dollar notes...

While the minimum wage is a bit higher here (US$8.90 compared to US$6.00 for you), significantly higher PAYE taxes mean that what makes it into a minimum wage earner's pocket won't be all that much more.

Other costs and taxes are also much higher here. For instance, add in vastly higher petrol prices (BC, CA pays around C$1.03 per litre; New Zealanders pay $NZ 2.18 per litre for 95 octane petrol (C$1.79). A large chunk of the difference is tax.

I don't mean to whinge, because having lived in a few countries, I love it here. I just want to disprove the fallacy that is so often trotted out on these forums (not necessarily by you, I hasten to add) about NZ deserving higher Steam prices because we are so obscenely rich in comparison to other poorer, less developed nations such as the USA, UK, South Korea, Japan and Quatar...

Here here! And I also agree that in a CRAP TON of cases steam is ripping people off, especially euro nations.

+1

The game publishers are probably at least as much to blame as Steam for the high prices though. Some operate fair pricing, with the game costing a similar amount across all territories. Others don't (Activision, I'm looking at you....)
