ive seen stronghold kingdoms. dont really like
i like games like red alert and planetary annihilation where you build a base, build an empire and then attack

Isn't StarCraft II somewhat free nowadays? Like starter edition enabling you to play all kinds of custom games (also melee) ... or wasn't it even Terran fully free (also for ladder)?

The only ones I know of are March of War and Stronghold Kingdoms.

starcraft 2 is mostly free and a great strategy game. get the starter edition and try out the tons of arcade game modes....its just like hundreds of individual games

Aurora pentarch is a space 4x, nicknamed the dwarf fortress of space. Both require the deepest strategy you're going to get for free in new stuff. You should be able to find some good stuff in abandoware thought, perhaps civil war 2, sid meir gettysburg, or stuff like that. There is some stuff going on in the open source world like 0AD but meh.
