As you can see, I have made a non-CV giveaway for RPG Maker VX Ace that will end in late November-- it is available only to members of this group which is currently empty.

How will we fill this group?

As the title alludes, any wishing to join should propose a videogame of their own! Specifically, a design that can be created with the prize at hand, RPG Maker VX Ace. Your proposal may take any shape you wish and can be any length, but it must be posted here in this thread. Any idea deemed worthy will receive a group invite.

Acceptance is completely at my discretion and current state of intoxication. I'll be looking for legibility, well-defined goals, and some sense of how you will implement your grand ideas. I reserve the right to be picky-as-a-mofo, because I intend to keep the overall number of entries relatively low. This is a free opportunity to bounce some creative ideas off of your digital peers, and we will all get to observe the progress and product of our winner.

I'll be dropping some small, private GA links along the way for giggles. I hope you find the event intriguing and entertaining, good luck! ^__^

I'm of the generation that has wanted to make video games since the first time I played one. (Actually, that might be every generation.) My cousin and I in particular did this all the time. We'd play board games and continually adjust the rules until we had whole new games. We rented Golden Axe one weekend and got so psyched that we worked out a video game we would create together (not that we ever did.) A few years later, during the golden years of Magic: The Gathering, we created our own card game. I wrote them, he drew them. Sometimes I wrote the cards and he drew something relevant. Sometimes he just drew something awesome and I had to figure out how it worked. Some years later, he gave me a script and I created a video game for it the only way I knew how: my TI-83+ calculator for math class. The two of us have always had ideas, however unsuccessful or ultimately ignored they may have been. Point being, I've got those pixels running in my blood.

But there are too many ideas. I don't even know where to start. All I know is that I'd most likely create either several small games or one normal-sized game released in chapters (likely the former.) But with all these ideas, what to submit? I feel like the best move in a situation like this is to choose an idea at random. Why random? Because a lot of the projects in my head are somewhat involved, and I want to keep this simple, both for description in this thread and creation as software. But specifically, I'm going to ask this random game premise generator to create an RPG idea for me. I got a few really neat hits (like "An MMO where you go to school with creatures while balancing your karma" and "A god game where you mix plants ad nauseam",) but they weren't RPGs. Here's the first one I got in that department:

  • A role-playing game where you resurrect angels and loot sweet gear.

I can work with that. It's commonly understood in tabletop gaming that the majority of gameplay involves killing people and taking their stuff. There's a game--one of my favorites--called Dead Inside, which boasts that it's a game about resurrecting people and giving them your stuff. Taking that as an inspiration, this prompt seems like a fair enough premise for me to take an honest crack at. Ever read Preacher? It's a great graphic novel, and it goes way, way beyond Biblical canon when it comes to extrapolating and inverting your typical Western perception of YHWH. I feel like I might do something similar to the melange of cultural appropriations surrounding the idea of angels.

First and foremost, however, it's an RPG, and I have to collect sweet loot(!) so we can't avoid having stats, even though I'd generally prefer to. But these don't need to be the standard stats like Strength or Luck or anything. We don't need the typical loot situation, either. I've recently started playing Muramasa: The Demon Blade (for the Wii) and I like the way it handles weapons. Each one has its own appearance, its own special move, its own range, its own durability. The amount of damage a given blade does isn't as important as other factors, chief among them being how well you manage them. I want to take that idea, but maybe--since we're already doing away with traditional stats--we'll loot non-physical items. (I'm not entirely sure yet what that means, but it will tie in to the unorthodox stats I'll be using.)

Now, I've got a fair bit of spare time on my hands these days, and I've been itching to learn a new skill. This seems like a great opportunity to start livin' that dream - the dream of finally being able to make my own games, until I realize it's hard, and that I keep finding bugs, and I start to hate everything that I am or ever was, start to wonder if I'm even any good at this, start to wonder if I should just join a monastic order in a foreign country. But that's just part of my creative process.

Anyway, if you want more specifics, I'm happy to give them to you.

TL;DR: The basics are

  • resurrect angels and loot sweet gear
  • careful and engaging plot bending the typical understanding of angels
  • non-traditional gear/stats system
  • ::: emphasis on gear uniqueness
  • ::: hides the math from the user
  • not particularly long, and likely free

Implementation: I like reddit. I find that just about any subject has its own subreddit, and there are usually several friendly, helpful people that can answer questions. I'll be using the relevant subreddits over there to sort out any technical issues. Once I've got a release ready for testing, I'll be offering it up to forumgoers here on SG as well as anyone else that may have an interest. As for the graphics, I'll have to go lo-fi/retro until a better plan comes along, since I don't have much skill in that department. With any luck, this learning experience will be a gateway to deeper understanding of game development. Thanks for the opportunity :)

I would follow either of the concepts i had kept for a while already, which i guess that are possible mainly via the RGSS scripts used by RPG Maker:

1 - A strategy game, like the typical turn-based tiled tactics games, but where you actually build your own war machines, selecting the components, allowing for a massive number of options and strategies, like fast movement, heavy armor, massive damage, or balanced forces. The theme would be something close to a "new world silver rush".

2 - A action-based RPG that would follow the tabletop RPG i used to master, which is a mix up of a post-apocalyptic game with steampunk features. As a action style game isn't very group-based, the game would follow as a custom built adventurer, maybe a follower/allied AI, and he would be leading a group of refugees through a harsh area, with many missions and choices, pointing towards many endings and many developments for the refugee group.

I am aware the descriptions are still a bit vague, but i can't really give much detail and then leave it without fullfilling the concept after discovering some restriction from the software i'm unaware of.

I always wanted to make a game that was sort of like Live-A-Live and SaGa Frontier; it would have multiple storylines that are mostly disconnected but all come together at the end to form the final plot arc.

Each storyline would be on a different planet and the planets will have differing technology levels so there can be a medieval story as well as a robot plot without feeling too out of place in the same game. I don't know how many different stories total I could manage but I'm thinking at least 7. That would cover at least cowboys, medieval Europe, feudal Japan, beastmen, power rangers, robots/cybernetics, modern day, and a final arc.

The final storyline would be about the big bad terrorizing a planet that has access to space travel. The protagonist would then break their society's 'no interfering with low tech planets' law to go to the other planets affected by the big bad looking for strong people to help him get revenge. He would find the other heroes and they would all join together to assault the villain's fortress of doom.

As for gameplay itself, I'd like to try to do SaGa's 'gain stats based on what you do in combat' system; cast spells and you will gain more magic stats than physical ones and vice-versa. Some characters would lean more towards one style than the other but with effort you could make the knight into a heavily armored wizard. I tried this long ago in RM2k but that was more than ten years ago now and it didn't even have ruby built in at the time so I couldn't manage to pull it off.

Thanks for all these giveaways by the way!

Proposal two:

:)

An RPG where you start as a kid, early stages would be your hometown, neighborhood, schoolyard. After a weekend of fun and games, you decides to skip school... only to find yourself warped into a trans-dimensional portal into a different universe. Here you travel to different worlds, battling over many different stages and complete multiple quests to help the "beings" who pulled you through as their "chosen one" to defeat their enemies through different forms of melee and telepathic magic. After defeating their boss, you learn of their plan to get revenge against you by attacking your home dimension.

The end game would take place back on Earth, but now you have gone from student to ultimate inter-dimensional bad ass. Defending your planet and all human kind against the most evil monsters on the universe.

Since I have so many ideas, and would really like a chance at this awesome giveaway,

Proposal three:

A game where you start as an insect. Wandering a vast landscape of grass and dirt patches. It's somebodies lawn. You explore the terrain, finding your way into houses, other yards, peoples garages, all the while battling other bugs, spiders, avoiding humans, birds and pets. Over the course of the game you level up your abilities, gaining a thicker exoskeleton, bigger pincers/claws, faster legs, the ability to spit poison, among other mutations. Choices for these would close off other avenues while expanding your options to explore, such as being able to access areas that before were unavailable. I really like the idea of rewarding different play styles in multiple playthroughs.

I have a bunch of ideas, and this is just the tip of the iceberg. :D

Me and some friends are already planning this, but what the hell, I'll share our idea anyway.

It is the future, walruses have taken over, the main Antagonist of the game is Adolf Walrus and his army of cyborg walruses as they have revived him. Throughout the story, you will learn how to take down Adolf Walrus, and one of the areas in the open world is planned to be the "snow realm" which happened by one of the gods of the walrus world havin' a bit of a bat, and "snow" covered the area mutating anything and everything it touches (not the player character). One of the items in the game is the super drug invented by Adolf Walrus and go through a worm hole into an area where everyone is on drugs and everything is painted with rainbows and has the Australian Classification Board in it.

In a nutshell, me and my friends can come up with some f**ked up ideas.

old school Squaresoft/SNES style top down RPG set in Joss Whedon's Firefly universe. Story would be a compilation of adventures and plots from the tv show, the movie, adventure modules from the table top game, and storys from fan fiction (with author approval of course). In terms of RPG mechanics, leveling up would be less linear, allowing you to accrue skill points and upgrade specific abilities over time. stats, skills, weaknesses, and bonuses would be built using a similar structure to the Serenity table top game's character system. items would appear to make both statistical and cosmetic changes to your character.

Major features would include adventures on rim planets, core/Alliance planets, zero-g missions, space combat, an in depth economy and merchent system, the ability to side with alliance, or be a true browncoat whos just lookin to keep flying. cameo appearances by characters from the show inject fun plot connections to the crew of the serenity, while allowing you to maintain your own character, crew, and story that exists seperately. Upgradable ship functions as your base of operations. Want your crew to level up faster and do more damage? customize your ship with a gym, or a laser shooting range. Wanna be able to make trips to farther planets, with less stops? bigger fuel tanks, stronger engines, a kitchen, a cook. Various upgrades would be able to be purchased that would make cosmetic changes to the ship, as well as offer both passive and active bonuses (sick of paying a fortune for medical help that stays off alliance radar? get a med bay and a doctor!)

i could literally keep going for hours, this is something ive been wanting to do for AGES, specificially with this software. All i need is a legal copy, and to put together a team of people to help develop it.

obviously due to liscencing issues, itd have to be called like LighteningBug or something, but its not meant to p[lagarize, its meant ot pay tribute and be a fun, in depth game that Browncoats all over can play and enjoy. Other detals would undergo minor changes as well, to avoid infringing on Fox, since we know what dicks they can be about it. Development would be funded entirely by personal moneys, and donations from fans, and the final release of the game would be completely free to play, no microtransactions or anything. This isnt a scheme to make money off something already created, its a labor of love, from one fan to many.

I don't have anything special that i want to create gameplay wise. It would basically be like a Final Fantasy close for the gameplay, but I would love to create a whole new world with a completely new set of lore because I've always wanted to be an author, but that wont happen since my skills at writing are not that great. I am not entirely sure what lore I would create as I have hundreds in my head that I would like to use. So please give me an invite and chance for RPG maker vx ace.

Free bump!

A random dungeon/castle with random loot, you are lost in the woods and apparently were involved in a car/bus/spaceship (looking at wreckage, dirty/damaged clothes, cuts, etc) accdident and although your memory module is now self-repaired you can't remember who you are and why you're here. Since you're from an advanced civ / come from the future, you have high tech weapons/tools. The "dungeon" you'll get into has lots and lots of puzzles (and then some enemies too). You'll need -at some point- to create a portal gun (yeah, you could!) and then.. well, move on up, and up, to the top of the "dungeon" to have a clear view of where you are and think your best option. When (if) you reach the top floor, you may or may not found yourself trapped, a big epic boss fight, or simply a white almost-empty room; this room begings to look like an emergency/ICU room, voices start to be heard and you have flashbacks (or is it?) you suddently don't know if you're really on this dungeon or... or.. you're being revived by medical staff, and ofcourse all your little adventure was just a VERY lucid dream.. You're presented with the last choise you'll ever make (in the game); step on the border, sync to reveal map (ok, that's a joke from AC!) and then decide, jump off to.. whatever happens if you freefall, or remain there, at the dungeon, lord and master of the shadow tower, not ever knowing which world was a dream...

There was a game I played, can't remember if it was sega, snes, you could fish, you could fusion 2 characters into a more powerful one and ofc control him/her, this had 2 pods, very like the ones on the Fly movie. Think it's the same you have a flying fortress you've fixed. It could either be an Breath of Fire, or one of the Dragon Ball drawing style, with a frog with implants, a werewolf, maybe magic. It mostly was a plataformer (fishing view) and top isometric view for the rest. What a delightful game it was! :D

These are two ideas I tossed to a friend (he's actually in the group already), so I'll just leave them here:

1) A short story about social consequences, as told through two play-throughs of the same event— one after the other. In the first play-through you make choices as one character, which subsequently remove/add options from the second play-through as the other character. This is made apparent with a strikethrough of the removed options, and a mark (maybe an asterisk?) by the added ones.

2) A short story about social roles, as told through the perspective of a character that the player defines through a short intro sequence. Once the character is defined he or she is placed in situations where he or she is limited by their various attributes, be it nationality, gender, social standing, wealth, and maybe a few others. The choices are greyed out when they are inaccessible. In the final scene, the game will allow the character to proceed with a greyed-out choice if they desire, with either realistic consequences or plausible acceptance (depending on if I am feeling pessimistic or optimistic, or maybe I could make it random).

Note: If I deem it thematically significant, I could add an epilogue scene where the character can choose a greyed-out choice if they chose a greyed-out choice in the final scene. This would be especially powerful if they had a negative reaction: would they dare to defy norms again if that was what they wished to do?

Note 2: One issue with this is that it will take a while to write out all the possible scenarios for each definition. The more inclusive I am, the harder to write. Also, I have little experience outside of my particular experiences, so it will be hard to craft a realistic experience for those far outside of my own situations.

The first idea would be cool as a visual novel, not necessarily a short one. I also got an idea where you would play several different characters in completely separate scenarios and then they would all appear in or affect the main scenario where you play yet another character. Kinda like what Telltale did in the 500 Days DLC for Walking Dead, but the stories would be longer and offer more choices. I don't know, it could work.

It would also be cool to make a game like Live-A-Live - bigger and longer, but with the same "shit" graphics, you know the drill.

Whatever.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah... Separate scenarios leading to one unifying scenario has been done before, which is why I wanted to make an entirely different game where choices affect other choices in a kind of real tim, yet also asynchronous way. This way the effect is even more striking, since the the second play through is severely and obviously limited by the choices you make in the first, as opposed to being merely "influencable" by past choices.

I enjoyed 400 days, but I'm still kind of confused as to how it'll all connect. I suppose we'll just have to wait and see what the second season will bring.

I've never heard of Live-A-Live, but I must object to your comment about the graphics—I find 16-bit graphics very appealing. Just look at To the Moon.

You know... I don't know if I am worthy of having this (as I have a lot of ideas, but rarely carry them through). If I were to create a game, I'd probably try something not rehashed a million times: no samurai, no knights, no modern US army, no nothing that had been already used in a million games. If I were to propose an idea:

A) Early medieval world. Yes, I mentioned no knights, but hear me out - by early I mean really early, with coat of mails being best armours and nobles of any sort being rare. No magic per se, but supernatural system based on superstitions from the period: alchemy, charms, amulets and potions. World that is not a Dungeon and Dragon copy, but world as our ancestors imagined it to be 1200 years ago. Think era of early Vikings and (historical) King Arthur. I just think this period is really unexplored, both in fantasy and in games.

B) Get rid of world as human see it entirely and instead base a story in unique world filled with unique people with traits different than ours. I think exploring the differences could be real fun - doubly so if player is allowed, through social systems, to influence these differences and shape the world more to his liking... Or just to see what would happen. A fable being a sort of sandbox story, where you influence not the world, but story itself. I find it hard to explain, but we all must have had moments where excellent story had a detail or two we found wrong or not to our liking - I think being able to correct it would be great.
