Steins Gate is on my gray-wishlist for a long time. I know it gets praises a lot, read a lot of reviews and kinda fascinated from a distance. So some time ago I started to the series with Chaos Head (anime) because of the chronological order. I got disturbed after watching the first episode and dropped right there. Also from the reviews, I know Steins Gate is different from Chaos Head (only the universe is same), but I still have many doubts because of the first episode of Chaos Head.
Since you mentioned Chaos Child, I kinda assumed you know Chaos Head as well. What do you think about it? If you know Steins Gate as well (played or watched), what do you suggest to someone who got disturbed by Chaos Head?

I'm actually in the process of chaos head right now. I'm on chapter 9 of 10 so o am yet to reach the conclusion. It's a really confusing game, kinda like steins gate actually.. it's hard to tell what is real and what is not especially as chaos head and child have this specialty of letting you see either lewd or threatening hallucinations. Now idk what the 1st episode of the anime is like but if that disturbs you I cant suggest the series. It does get more gory later on and as it's a mystery you are constantly under threat of being attacked physically and mentally. Child doesn't need an explanation you can ses it on the stage page plain as day what is gonna happen
While I didn't watch the episode I quickly skimmed through the 1st episode, gosh that english is weird. It covered more then I expected but you only really saw 1 major instance of the 1st murder which let me say is very tame compared to later one or even the 2 that took place before that as that was the 3rd new gen killing we get introduced to. I only saw a little bit of it as I was just randomly looking but I actually liked that bit, its close up compared to the visual novel where we are just so far away. Felt more creepier. Omg I cant take that anime seriously! How do you know about di swords, cuz I got one silly boy. Oh this anime is so stupid, like it should be creepy being stared at but its just laughable XD
Steins gate I only made to chapter 6. I've tried playing it twice but never had the motivation to carry on. I do like the game but I've never been in the right head space to carry on. From the bits I've read it's not as bad as chaos but it's a time travel novel which can go a bit funky after a while trying to figure out what is true and what is false every other scene. From where I left off it started to become darker but as I havent made it past chapter 6 maybe it doesnt escalate as much as unlike chaos it doesnt have it straight on the store page that guess what murders are happening. You can clearly see a traumatised kid. It does just mainly focuses on the time travel idea and how things quickly end up going wrong from changes being made

Not the gore part, and I'm usually okay with gore unless it's hard-gore. (Sorry about the pun)
It was more psychological than it's a horror. That doesn't happen if I hand-picked the game or the anime, but when it's a recommendation it can get weird, which happened more than I expected in Chaos Head. I gotta admit, I should've expected nothing less from that friend.
From what I read here, I guess I should conclude it right now. Because it's the idea that mostly disturbed me. If it will get creeper, I think I bailed out at the very point. As a person that couldn't even play Resident Evil games, there are borders that I shouldn't pass.
If Steins Gate is still a bit like Chaos Head, I don't think I'll go and play it from now on.

Ah yeah psychological, I've just done part 9 now and gosh it was all over the place. It really brought out the whole nothing is real and got really screwed up. Erm I wouldn't really call this call hard-gore but maybe I'm so used to things at this point that nothing really effects me its more like huh that looks interesting cool. Oh not enough torture for my liking 1/10. Frankly this game just has a lot going for it that would turn people off
Again for steins gate I cant be sure on. While its much more light hearted then this game I cant be sure it doesn't get weirder. You kinda gotta take it as a usual time travel game and expect things to get really messed up or confusing even from the start.

There's only 1 thing that has ever effected me and its this novel called Harukoi Otome. I do like the story and when I 1st heard the opening I loved it. It was my favourite ever and even now I love the song but there's this 1 route that bugs me way to much. There's this 1 girl who through the entire route just has depressing music. Between that and the fact she's fake dating our friend, not cuz she likes him even a bit but to hide from us as apparently now shes ashamed for what she did in the past, until the very end of her stupid route its to much. I've dealt with difficult subjects, I've gone through different amount of torture and gore the whole like. But 1 thing I can handle is our romance objects (just leaving that in there cuz damn I cant believe I called them objects) dating someone else! Jealously is apparently the only thing that get under my skin
Also someone clearly doesnt know the lore behind 100% orange juice XD

Just checked it and not gonna lie loved the art style. Somehow reminded me Kanon (from 2000's) and felt kinda nostalgic. When the art style is that good, it affects more indubitably.
Well, I only played Suguri games in the past, so I only know those parts from the lore, but Sora is on my wishlist. Flying Red Barrel too. OJ is dank more than dark though so it's okay. :)
For me, one of the worst train wreck incidents is Neptunia rebirth 2 conquest ending. From the near past at least.

well update I've just beaten ending A + AA of chaos head and chapter 10 is completely messed up. Idk if ending A is even important, it kinda feels like the bad end where its just there to cut out the story half way because you made a wrong choice. There's an ending B where the whole hallucination mechanics fit it but like idk how they can top that ending unless its a random happy end which doesnt feel fitting

I would think like that too, a happy ending doesn't fit the concept, even from a distance. Maybe a happy ending is actually the bad ending since the game is the other way.
If it's completely messed up for you, I don't want to think what would it do to me.

Well finally finished, took about 45 minutes to skip from chapter 1 to the new end. That ending wow just idk what to think about it. The ending does fit the type of game it is and I know a happy end wouldn't be right but you know you cant help but feel like a happy end should come. Most things end happy but this one is like, hey 1 more final push of gruesomeness and then boom be sad! I do like the ending B song though. I've worked on this game for the past week for a total of 9 hours and 50 minutes, it just feels like I'm missing the rest of the ending but nope definitely got it all. Huh -3 cgs but I'm not spending an extra 2 hours to figure out if its delusions I didn't go through long enough for but like its kinda bugging me that I don't have them all. It seems like they are in order for the most part so it seems like end game cgs. Maybe because I didn't say glasses were a fetish I'm missing a cg with glasses!

3 endings seem good for 10 hours run I think. Depends on the developer though, some devs literally add an ending for every person, which requires a lot of skipping, I'm actually fine with fewer endings.
By the way, you really ARE an achievement hunter, huh. I'm jealous. ^^

well how long to beat tricked me with the 24 hours. even the completion time the shortest I saw was 24 and I'm just there as the loner under 10 XD While chaos head does have romance bits its not meant to be a romance story so its a lot less.
Child though has many more endings and it looks quite interesting but we will see how it actually plays out
I actually just done my 500th perfect game which is my 1st game for this event

It's probably because of not enough entries. I saw a game with ~100 hours while it should be around 15 or something. Some people trolling I guess. Or maybe they did re-runs without skipping. :)

There is someone at 14 and a half hours done for all endings beat. Idk why they put it in main game though

Yeah 80 is pretty decent, some games don't even have that much. Yours seems like a speedrun comparing to those. Maybe you read faster, that certainly affects VNs without voice acting. Though I don't know if it has or not.
If you start a game and then have an achievement (usually "start the game" achievements) that completion rate drops like a dead bird. I have those a lot.
Yeah, Alice is one of the coolest games I've played, pretty dark though.

Chaos did have voice acting but I'm not one to listen to the whole thing, I don't have time to be listening to a bunch of jibberish just like I don't have time to listen to the disturbing english voice acting either. There is a lot of effort put into voice acting which I do love to see in visual novels but it would slow me down way to much and I'd never finish stories if that was so
As of late I've not be completing long games so my achievements took a hit from starting and not finishing.1 day I'll be on 93% and another new game won't ruin that stat

I understand. So that 24 hours average is probably because of people sit down and listen all of it, that explains it. I agree with the English voice actings. If it's a Japanese game, I choose Japanese voice acting all the way.
With that high rate, perhaps it will kinda take long time to get there but you'll get there. Cannot say the same thing for myself. I'm a tester for Steam Proton and try to play every game when I have time. Probably that's the main reason for me but I'm okay with it. After deleting ~400 games and became a very picky to buy new games, I believe I'll get there too. Much more slower though.

oh yeah idk about that. i've seen games with hours and no voice acting. I straight up cant trust visual novel times as people either speedrun the thing or are just way to slow. Luckily the games with speedruns have a bunch of times so those couple of people being like yeah 1 hour on a 20 hour game suckers don't really impact anything

Yep thats what I said about luckily the ones I've seen with speedruns typically have other games to bring us a proper time but I don't get the point of adding a speedrun timer on the completion side. I know most games are brought in bundles now but I don't add games just to skip through them. Wanna do it with free games well thats your choice but why would you do that for a brought game. Like no one is gonna look at your speedrun time and think yeah I'll do the same, if you are looking at times you probably wanna get a rough idea of how long it takes to play

dude i think this game is to much for me. i just cant believe what I've just witnessed our 14 year old sister got killed in the most worse way possible just damn they seriously killed off a kid! a poor innocent orphan who we now need to tell her real brother shes gone. killing kids just crosses the line. Like i was enjoying the deaths but like there's nothing fun about it happening to a kid. You cant save the best death for a child. Its not my 1st time seeing something like that but this one hits harder then all the other kiddos, always the girls... watch out for them girls! I think I'm just gonna call it a day on that. I can finish up the remaining 3 tomorrow

I'll assume the devs reached their goals for being tragic but I agree, it's easier to form an emotional bond with a child, so of course it will affect the player much more. Sometimes Japanese people have no boundaries.

Its one of those things as well, where we got tricked. You set them up to be a main character only for the next scene to prove us wrong. Chaos child is not holding back. Chaos head we barely got to form a bond with people but we get a bigger bond here. Basically in chaos don't be siblings cuz it didn't work out there either!

Aw geez it happened again man. How is there still 2 more chapters to go, just how badly can our dudes live become! Head played around with your mind by having everything not be real. You couldn't tell what was true or not. Child messed with your emotions, it leads you into this false security as nothing directly impacts the mc. Only for these last chapters to be like haha you let your guard down time to mess with your head!

its gotten worse!!!! im on the last chapter though but geez the fact this has endings idk what to think. With head its like yep we are done okay wow and while it did have ending A and B it didn't change all that much just went into the murders a bit more. Like idk how I'm suppose to look at the people in this game and think yeah 6 more endings!

I've read Steins;Gate & Steins;Gate 0, but I didn't read Cece's big spoiler and haven't played Chaos;.. series; so from what I picked up here, I can tell that Steins;Gate isn't similar to Chaos;Child/Head. There is no gore, no horror, nothing disturbing — it's a solid sci-fi novel about time-traveling, and I'd say it's perfectly safe to recommend it to any western person who likes sci-fi in general, who doesn't even watch anime, and who haven't even read any VNs before. I mean Yakuza 0 has much more "crazy Japanese style" than Steins;Gate :)

Well, it's a saga, same universe, so I started chronologically. They go as Chaos >> Steins >> Robotics order.
I can say I'm not a "zero gore" person. I can tolerate gore like in Dead Island (It was somehow different 10 years ago). It's probably the way how the gore is presented. (Though I can say that I'm not a horror person unless it's some kind of psychological horror, at least I did finished Neverending Nightmares, it was still uneasy.)
Anyway, after chatting with Cece here, I kinda assumed Steins;Gate could be similar in a fashion with Chaos series. However after your comment I have now mixed signals here, again. It definitely never-ever does not have horror/gore? Like, if I wanted you to age rate the game how would you rated? You can even disregard the psychological parts while doing that.

Hmm, teen, I guess. Welp, teenagers won't be interested in it, but that's another topic. There's one murder scene right at the start, but it's not even remotely a gore or a horror. And even this one main protagonist escaped quite quickly. It's the same with other rare moments. So no, no such things as out-of-the-line descriptions of a dead body, gruesome details, thoughts, images, & no soundtrack, sounds and voices (or hallucinations) that were designed to scare you, nope. The words "horror" or "gore" or "eww" or "damn, this is fucked up" never crossed my mind while I was reading it. Time travel can fuck up your mind though, but I'd say it's more or less the same with all time travel sci-fi
Was it a murder scene in the 1st episode of Chaos;Head that disturbed you? I just watched it to have an idea. If it was it, so no, there won't be anything like this in Steins;Gate. But I should warn you not to play "Dry Drowning", it was bundled recently and it has some serial killer stuff in it. Don't remember anything else disturbing that I played recently.
And by the way, I'm not a Resident Evil person too :) Won't play it, won't watch a playthrough. And won't ever ever play smth like "Outlast", for example. Don't know about Dead Island though, because zombies are not my thing. Hmm what else.. I played Dead Space, but with half-closed eyes and because I was forced to xD. Also, I don't remember much of Neverending Nightmares, but I think for me the most disturbing part was to walk in the dark. I hate when you have to walk in the dark and wait for smth scary to happen, so I'm trying not to play that kind of games. I have exceptions though, like Layers of Fear, Soma & Observer, but that's only because of a good story.
I also looked up age rating for anime series, not games — and it's 13 for Steins;Gate 17 for Chaos;Child & Chaos;Head both. Though I didn't watch Steins;Gate series, I'm sure it's very very similar to the VN
What for chronological order — I looked up the matter too, and yeah, all three series are from the same universe, but at different times. Here and there you'll see some references, but that's all. I'd say you can totally safely play Steins;Gate + Steins;Gate 0 and won't miss anything by not playing/watching Chaos & Robotics :)

Seems actually safe. So, besides the time travel stuff Steins;Gate is more like a lightweight version of Chaos series or completely unrelated other than the universe? If latter, I can add them again to my wishlist I guess.
I don't remember crystal clear since it's been a while however as for the strongly disturbed part, it was not the murder scene but the whole idea of the female character (cannot remember the name), though murder scene was disturbing as well.
I could've played Resident Evil (just because of curiosity) but it's so slow-paced, it's making me nervous. :) I hardly finished Dead Space as well. Very good story but never gonna go back to those corridors. :)
I also tried to play Amnesia: The Dark Descent, because it seemed interesting, still is, but no I couldn't take that pressure. There are many games in my library, rated "Overwhelmingly positive" but sadly they're not for me.
If the references part is like between "Tales of" games, it would be easy to ignore them. And it's good to know that I don't need other than Steins;Gate is also reassuring.

Characters are different, the theme is completely different (I only learned about serial killing stuff & hallucinations/delusions from this thread) and those references are more like easter eggs (when you know smth you may notice, but if you don't know you won't notice a reference at all), so yeah, plotwise S;G is totally unrelated and independent. I also copy-pasted an answer from reddit:
"There's no major connection between any of the Science;Adventure games. The only connection Chaos;Head has to Steins;Gate AFAIK is that a fictional character from C;H appears once as background image in S;G.
Robotics;Notes has a bit more of a tie in though - a minor character (at least in the show) from S;G becomes a supporting character (and a major character makes a tiny cameo in the R;N game, but got cut from the anime), and a device from C;H comes back as a newer version with a use that's completely different (and the explanation is basically ignored or "science-magicked" away in each)"
So yep, you are totally safe to completely skip Chaos :)
There will be bad endings though, it's not a romantic VN after all, but I see it as a positive thing — it's a very organic part of the game and makes your path to the true ending whole (coherent)
Also, if you'll ever change your mind about it, I'll share with you the best possible order to play S;G & S;G 0 (no spoilers). I played like that myself, and can confirm that I didn't regret :)

I'm okay with bad endings, they're the spices of VNs. By the way that's an interesting way to play two games. I'm guessing S;G 0 filling the plotholes, that would make sense.

Looking back you can see just how easier this thing has gotten. Early days you couldn't have played a game for 25% of the achievements. You couldn't play any multiplayer or endless games. Sadly as a profile was deleted the thread apparently also goes with them so you just see a bunch of people being like were playing without any context why. I would say we get a good amount of people taking part and comments. But yeah there was just a lot of confirming things back then while now we got the thread so you don't really need that whole confirmation of this and that. The one above was simply a challenge thing, you know you got points for a lot of different things, plus having people choose your games just obviously made it have more. It was a lot going on but I like the rules. Here we get the chance to play games weve touched, the other way was basically saying we dont care about you actually finishing games. 25% achievement might not sound like a lot but I'm sure its gotta be confirmed at the current time to make sure you can take part and that its not a game where you've played hours soon.
Endless and multiplayer is a bit awkward but we do get the chance to play it as long as you meet a certain time or 25% achievements I believe it is. For the past year we've been hovering around 160-180 people which is insane. I know not all of them complete their games but most people at least have some time they put into it. Right now 18 days in we got 160 different people, with 103 completing 1 game so far

Hmm, it's actually almost twice as people since I joined the group, which is pretty good. It seems they had to remove such rules when more people joined, since it would be harder to check every person manually.
Personally I like rules like those but I like the current situation more. I mostly play my backlog here and it is a great excuse to do that for me, every little motivation is good anyway.
Endless and multiplayer games are grey area in my opinion. If you won Europa Universalis IV here, good luck getting those achievements. I won Payday 2 here, played like 15 hours, got bored. I have 37 achievements, out of 1246. 25% is pretty high for me in this case. :)

payday 2 has a time of 24 hours main time so I guess that would be the cut off point to allow. However you just need to give the game a decent try so while 15 hours wouldnt be enough for an entry its at least enough to let you play backlog.

to be honest, i forgot that you can start midway. i didn't remember the time and achievements from yesterday though so i'll just put the time that i took after i beaten the normal game today. there are still the dlc scenarios and official scenarios to be finished, and i need to replay them again to get 100% achievements since most of them require me to beat them in the hardest difficulty. hopefully that would be alright.

You can add plague: inc since it has a Japanese translation and as Moony said just add the achievements and time you got before the event started to "Stats before the start of the event"

Hard West was pretty much what I expected: Old West XCOM... and then it got very weeeeeeird. But still fun. But very weird. Still recommend it if you like tactical strategy games though.
Felix was so cool! I wasn't expecting that. I don't know if it's a Sokoban game exactly but I wasn't expecting to be taken by the story and the music and dancing so much. Really charming game.
There is no way I'm going to play Subterrain now that I've sunk most of my playtime into Deadly Days (oops, not an event win but so fun!) so I think I may stay at these two this month unless I play other wins in co-op with my nephews on vacation starting next week.

I've completed the main game and the "after story", but not played more than 5 minutes of New Game + and it appears I've taken just a bit longer than the peeps on HLTB... 😅
I do think I kept AFK time to an absolute minimum on this one, so I guess I'm just really slow. Or everybody who completed on HLTB just skipped all the cut-scenes and dialogue 😏 (there are a lot of cut-scenes and dialogue 😁)
Anyway I've added another 4 hours to the "before" stats which should easily cover my AFK time I think.

I wouldn't tag it as a scary game, but that would be hard to say because I like horror games/movies since long ago, so it almost doesn't affect me. But if it's useful for you somehow, I played with my girlfriend (not in a coop way, but with her watching, like a personal streaming xD), and she said it wasn't scary, but one chapter was a little disgusting (I still don't understand why though).
Also, it has a couple of... jumpscares? I don't know if call them that way, but sometimes while you are investigating, a random ghost could appear and disappear making a sound. And that's it.

All around really nice games:
Deleveled is a nice puzzle/platformer mix (primarily puzzle) and it's one of the few puzzle games where it never felt too easy or too hard (ok, maaaybe World 8 pushes it a little, but it's still humanly doable ^_^' ).
Cargo! The Quest for Gravity is a very weird little adventure in a sandbox where you build your own vehicles from a selection of parts. However many copies you like of that selection of parts (with more and more restrictions being lifted as you progress the story), so yeah, some of the abominations of engineering I created were pretty big. It's a really nice "this is your goal, now achieve it however you like" kind of sandbox. :D (That said, it's kiiiiiinda buggy at times and some of the story objectives were sorta meh.)
And Double Cross is a fun little action plaftormer with some adventure game-y (and simple) investigations in-between. :D

It was so short that I decided to try finishing another game (Punch Club) too. It is a game for czech short episode movies for kids. It is about two dumbasses, who usually gets a problem requiring easy solution, but they come up with something crazy instead to make all worse and fixing it. Was a popular in my childhood, but seeing reviews, game is trash. Here is some series, I think any episode can show how far it it from war or hentai tags.

How can I know if the games I'll play will qualify this month's theme? Because what one can see as a theme-fitting game, others might not.

The subcategories are mostly quite clear and for those with interpretation you can provide some proof why you find them fitting and it should be fine. But the easiest is to just look for the tags, 30+ points or +24 HLTB time.
I can*t check if you already played it but "Crash Drive 2" has Competitive tag, so it would fit.

Crash Drive 2 should work since it has the competitive tag. As long as you have unplayed wins that fit one of the subcategories you'll have to play those first. If you have played all of them you can enter with normal backlog games that fit one of the categories.
As moony said it is easiest to fit a game into one of the tag categories or things where you can easily find prove like in this case the 30+ points or +24h HLTB category.
The subcategories that need some kind of proof to be provided are clearly marked. Proof can be a screenshot, a wiki article or whatever whatever you can think of.
For games with achivements we will check if an ending achivement was reached. If the game has no such achievement or no achievements at all, a screenshot of the end credits or ending scene is required. Also your profile must be public for at least the first approval (does the game fit the category, we also check for previous playtime and achievmetns earned before the beginning of the event) and the final approval (is the game beaten/compeleted).
If you are unsure if a game fits a category a quick post in this thread with the name of the game in question usually should get you an answer from either me or Ninglor or any of our more experienced participants ;)

Those games look all fine to me for this months event.
Well the approval part takes just a few moments, but it is mostly done manually, e.g. that means I have to be online to do it right away. Since I work rotating shifts I can't give you an exact time/date when this will happen, since it is basically whenever I have time.
What we do with a few others is they have either me or Ninglor as friends on steam and set their profile for friends only during approval. This would greatly limit who can see your details and we can let you know once we are done with it.

Create an invite only giveaway. You want to end it around the start of next month that way any late people get the chance to enter, so like between the 1st and 3rd but its up to you.

Technically, you can start it anytime as long as you started playing it at the start of this month, but if you are unsure whether the games that you picked fit the theme or not, you might want to wait, especially if you want to play the game just for the event.

Hi, sam! I was wondering if shapez.io will count as beaten if I finish 26 levels? It's actually an endless factorio-like game, but after you beat level 26 you unlock free play (goals for every level will generate randomly after that point). Achievements guide here (part "Level Requirements"), and the achievement for completed 26th level will be "Freedom"

For endless games we usually say either HLTB time for main story (which is 20h in this case) or 25% of achivements for it to be counted as beaten, which would be 12 achievements here.

So far I've always had the feeling that themes are way too broad and it would be really hard to find games that won't fit in one way or the other, there's always quite a bunch of common tags to pick from. I guess it's nice because that means everyone can participate if they want, but then it feels that the themes are mostly just cosmetic and don't really have an impact in the event itself beyond making someone look for a bit into which category they are picking for the game they want to play.
Though that doesn't really deter some people from not bothering to figure out even that, as evidenced by the common questions in the threads or how people just pick from their backlog instead of their wins. But that may be just a different matter.

I usually add some easier subcategories as we have some people here with maybe 20 wins or so where it is way harder to find a fitting one than for me with my way too many wins.
if you want a challenge, just go for the difficult subcategories ;) i always try to find a fitting game if I see a subcategory hasn't any entry :D

Yeah, I think the goal (and name) of the event really supercedes everything else, it's good that people can play their wins without worrying about them not matching. Yes, you can play with a game you got somewhere else if no wins fit, but ideally people should at least give a try to the games they've won, and PAGYWOS very much incentivizes people doing exactly that.

Who can participate
Anyone who does not have any unactivated wins, multiple wins or a VAC ban. You can participate even if you don't have any SteamGifts wins, see the "Have already completed all your wins?" below as it applies to this scenario too.
Extra Rules:
If it gives you one bundle of games with one steam ID then it depends. Do they each have achievements of their own (including an ending achievement)? Then go ahead and play them separately. Though make a note in the notes section, so we know what to look for. Non achievement games or games that play continuously (e.g. all entries play through without an ending between them) are not allowed atm since we do not have a good way to track them separately.
