The event officially opens at 00:00 UTC, any playtime/achivements before that won't be counted.

Countdown until event ends

Congrats to everyone who participated in August! The stats are the following:

  • 7093 achievements have been achieved
  • 4275.1 hours have been played
  • 342 games have been beaten
  • 168 people have participated and beaten at least one game.

Hope to see you all again this month :)

Due to timezones/people not being online 24/7 I am still accepting any edits/applications for August for the next couple of days (till the August thread is closed).

FAQ

Who can participate

Anyone who does not have any unactivated wins, multiple wins or a VAC ban. You can participate even if you don't have any SteamGifts wins, see the "Have already completed all your wins?" below as it applies to this scenario too.

Extra Rules:

  1. No comment on this thread? If there is something wrong with the game you submitted it gets deleted. With this many participants we can't chase after everyone.
  2. No comment on this thread = not invited to join/re-join the group.
  3. Any idle time (e.g. idleing for cards, answering the phone/door, looking up solutions, etc..while the game is still running) needs to be added to the time before the month. We want to have times that are as "clean" as possible for the leaderboard. Any time that is higher than 2x HLTB time will be considered as abnormally high and will raise questions.
  4. If we ask for proof that a game fits a certain category, please link the appropriate proof (e.g. screenshots, explanation, videos, etc.) in the notes section of the game entry on the event page. Same goes for the ending screenshots for games without achievements.
  5. DLC: I've won/bought a story DLC, can I (re-)play the game? If the DLC has achievements go ahead. If it has an ending achievement reaching that is enough. If there is no ending achievement you will need to complete all DLC achievements for it to count. If you have more than one story DLC then you can play each one as separate entry for different months as long as either the main game or DLC fits the theme. Please only add the main game to the event page and note in the notes section that you are going for DLC achievements.
  6. I've won a game bundle. Do I have to play all games for it to count? If the bundle gives you several games with different steam ID's feel free to play them one by one.
If it gives you one bundle of games with one steam ID then it depends. Do they each have achievements of their own (including an ending achievement)? Then go ahead and play them separately. Though make a note in the notes section, so we know what to look for. Non achievement games or games that play continuously (e.g. all entries play through without an ending between them) are not allowed atm since we do not have a good way to track them separately.
  7. The event officially opens at 00:00 UTC, any playtime/achivements before that won't be counted.

I think someone should update the link in the website homepage cause it still show the August event.

Also, SEPTember, OCTober, NOVember and DECember originally were the 7th-10th months of the year before January and February were added in front of them, furthermore, 6th and 7th months were changed to July and August in honor of Julius and Augustus Caesar, and nobody ever bothered with updating their number position. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

its suppose to be that way, august was the last event before the website was put up.
It's basically the websites way of linking back to all the previous months between 2017 and 2019

While on this thread its of course put up top as you don't have an easy access to all events after it was made

Also interesting fact. That explains the weird numbers, poor guys being pushed before the caesars

Actually not the 1st one to question it, I remember it being answered nearer to the start I believe. If you don't know why its easy to be like it needs to be changed, especially in September where your brain might think hey its last months link

Nah, its actually not true. For the first few months the front page was updated to link to the most recent event, but then I kinda just kept forgetting and I couldn't be bothered to update it (and Sam hasn't bothered either) so it has been stuck to August 2019 ever since :D It is actually supposed to have the latest month on it but don't expect that to ever be true since it doesn't really affect anything.

Edit: also damn, its the 20th and I haven't played anything for the event yet... I need to get my shit together.

I am new to this event. I am not sure I get these two rules:

No comment on this thread? If there is something wrong with the game you submitted it gets deleted. With this many participants we can't chase after everyone.
No comment on this thread = not invited to join/re-join the group.

Do I have to add some kind of comment to take part?
Also, can someone please confirm the difference between "Completed" and "Beaten"?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Welcome to the event!

No comment on this thread? - if there is some problem with the game you submitted and you didn't commented here you won't get contacted before it gets deleted, so if you are not checking the event page regularly you won't have a clue. With your comment here it's more convenient for our event masters to control everything.
And yes, without the comment here, you won't be invited to the group, because the invite notification is commented here.

Comment here with the games you wanna play this month. Don't forget they have to follow certain theme.
Then post your games here.

As for your other question. Beaten are games where you have played till the end, but still have other routes to complete or other achievements to collect. Completed games are those you have collected all their achievements (100%) or (mostly if the game is without achievements) you have seen everything possible in the game.
If the game you picked doesn't have achievements you should post on the event page proof of completion - screenshot of the credits or better from the ending cutscene or so.

Thanks a lot Kyrrelin. That clarifies pretty much everything.
I have few other doubts too, but I think it's ok. I'll probably get them with time. I kind of just saw these events every month and just wanted to joining even though I didn't know what they were for exactly until now, hoping that it might motivate me to clear my SG backlog.

I had already added the game to the event website before I posted this. Commented the game name as well.

I had beaten and completed mixed. Luckily I looked at the other entries and followed what they were doing, though still had my doubts.

Now that I have all the basics down, I might enter a few more games (I understand we can enter more than one game per month, right?), and upcoming months too. I had a lot of free time this month and actually completed 4 or 5 SG wins already.

If you have some other things on your mind, feel free to share them. ;)

I am participating for some time already (started 2019) and it's a great motivation for sure. :D

Your entry looks fine. Yeah, feel free to add as many games you want (if they meet the theme). Good luck!

It's nothing important. No worries.

That's a fairly long time imo, being able to play and beat new games every month for such a long time.

Thanks! I'll do that, probably, in a few days.

Kyrrelin did a good job explaining things. For this 1st month you will want to comment so you can be invited but after that you can choose if you want to do it or not. They do also put comments in the website but unless you are someone who will go back to check its better having a comment here just in case. Plus everyone can congratulate you on a good job done :)

Completed/Beaten doesn't matter. Like I personally never class games without achievements completed but its up to you, be crazy and put a 100% game into beaten if thats your dream. Only the overall status is counted for the stats not individual stats

Commenting every month might not have been something I would have wanted, but I can do so.

I don't understand what you mean by overall status?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

if you look at the very top, under countdown is just some stats about how everyone did. The amount of achievements everyone managed to get, the time we all spent this month gaming. How many people beat at least 1 game and between them how many games overall were finished.

For what I was talking about, I was basically saying it won't tell us 45 games were beaten and 20 completed. We will just be told 65 games were done. So you can feel free to place it any category you would like

You don't have to comment here every month, but it makes it a lot easier for us to get in contact with you if something is wrong with your game, like not fitting into a category or questions about playtime or such things.
I usually also comment on the entry itself, before deleting it, but if we do not get any feedback there then it will be just deleted. On average we have to deal with over 400 entries now that all have to be manually checked, if they fit the categories, if the previous playtime was set correctly, if it was a win or not and after completion if the game was actually beaten etc. So as you can imagine that is a lot of work on our part. So we simply do not want to have to run after people and find some other way to contact them 😉

Comment has been collapsed.

I understand.
I guess if commenting makes life easier for both of us, then I might do it (provided I remember).
Also, I wonder if at least some of those things can be automated. Like checking for steam tags and checking if it was a win or not.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The problem is that we have a lot of other subcategories that have nothing to do with tags (and the tag ones I can check with just 1 click due to some scripts ;)) so that would not really help that much and checking if it is a win I can do with one click, but we also have to check if it is not finished before the event and since not all games get completed or even do not have any (finishing) achievements it's not something you can really automate. You would still be left with most of the things to manually check. But don't worry we do this with two people and the website helps to automate a great deal.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I see, so you are already automating those 2.
As for the rest, sure automating them might not be easy, and I guess those rules change every month so it might not be beneficial either.
All the best! Hope there coms along some kind of tool to make things easier.

Kyrrelin and Cece have basically said all there is to say 😁

I think the only other thing to add is that the steam group memebership is not necessary to take part in the event. Just sometimes people like to make GA's outside of the event to the group exclusively. Membership can be obtained by taking part in the event successfully (e. g. beating/completing a game) and commenting here so we can invite you to the group. You stay a group member as long as you are an active part of the event (you can skip a month or two, but you shouldn't skip too many since we try to keep the group for active members).

Other than that welcome to the event.

I actually found out about the group a while after making a submission.
Anyway, I'd love to be a part of it, though I am sure in a month or two I am gonna get really busy. Gonna start a very stressful job late next month, and also gonna change cities by the year end. That's why I am trying to play as many games I can in what little time I have. Hope I will still get some free time later as well.

We are glad to have you. Good luck in your endeavor to play as many games as you can and I can certainly understand how a new job can limit free time a lot. Congrats on getting the job and I hope you will like it and still have some free time.
Have fun 😁

Well, yeah new job take up some time, at least initially. However, this particular project I am being hired for is really demanding, and I was in fact warned by the employer that I'll need to put in at least a few extra hours every day, and sometimes even work on weekends. I have my studies and my personal project to manage as well, though I haven't been able to make much progress on either of those for some time now.

Anyway, thanks.

So, the game I chose for this month has no end, so I was thinking of adding Styx: Shards of Darkness since it's so dark that it has two dark tags 😁, dark fantasy and dark humor, I know he suffers from amnesia in the first game but I couldn't find anything to confirm that he still has the same problem in the second, is that okay?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

iirc, dark humor and dark fantasy can't be used as dark tag category. i haven't played both games and it seems there are some heated discussions whether you are playing as the same protagonist as the first game, so if i were you, i would just play the game and put it on the list if it fits, and scrap it if it's not.

idk what you picked but depending on how much you played you can add it to the website. 1 criteria is getting the how long to beat time or a certain amount of achievements. I think it was like 25% or 50%. Considering endless games can be hard to get achievements for its probably 25% but I'd need to find the info to be sure on what it is

https://www.steamgifts.com/discussion/onj78/august-is-a-play-a-game-you-won-on-steamgifts-month-big-in-japan#HgymH1X
Yep I was right 25%, it was brought up multiple times last month, me included XD

Everything cece said is correct. If your game is endless you need either average HLTB for mainstory time or 25% of achivements for it to count as beaten, just add a little comment so we know what to look for ;)

It's not endless, it just doesn't have a campaign with achievements. It's kind of like FTL, one run after the other, only shorter.

Well that is kinda the same though unless you have some kind of ending the above said is how we try to manage games like that.
